Shy people are often liked by very few...

"Shy people are often not liked by as many people as they like or want to like them, but are, in fact, liked by very few."
I came across this quote a day or two ago. Do you agree or disagree. What have your experiences been?

I think the quote is very accurate. The simple fact is, many people simply don't know how to interact with shy people...and frankly, it is a challenge to interact with shy people, and all because of their shyness. It takes a special kind of extroverted person to understand shy/introverted person, but it's fellow shy/introverts that can actually 'fully' understand them. Anyway, I'm digressing here...

I'm a complete introvert, but I'm not shy in the least, so...I can't say that I've had 'experiences' where people have made it clear that they 'dislike' me. But, I have had many, many people make it obvious (not that they were meaning to) that they wanted to slip away from me because they weren't sure how to interact with me. I'm not a talker, never have been, never will be, I'm a reserved listener. But people don't know that right off the bat; they, after a few minutes of small talk with me, slip away assuming I'm terribly shy and uncomfortable being spoken to. NOT TRUE. ...When I've got something to say, TRUST ME, I'm going to say it (that is, if I believe it's the appropriate time to be said).

Anyway! My point here is, yes, I think the quote is the truth, but the reasoning behind the dislike of shy people is simply due to a misunderstanding of their 'shy' personality.

I don't mind shy people. Obviously they don't talk or interact much, and that makes them even more interesting since getting to know them is like opening up a treasure box. You never know what you'll find.

The bad reputation they have is probably due to a bitterness that builds up, having to deal with the social vampires and all.

Well, I've talked to a lot of people lately about me and why not too many women seem to fall for me. I'm told I'm attractive. I'm told I'm a wonderful guy. But it's never anything more than that. And I've been wondering for YEARS why an attractive, wonderful man never has anyone fall for him.

And I was told that maybe because I lack confidence in myself. That I'm too shy. I can be very open and loving and kind to the people I know. But you have to know me first. Having been a large guy my whole life, I've struggled with people never wanting anything to do with me, mocking me openly, etc.

So I don't really open up immediately. I don't have the greatest confidence because I was abused almost my whole life and don't have a positive opinion about myself. But maybe if I do open up a little and think more positive about myself, more people will like me? And I don't mean just romantically, but in general.

I came across this quote a day or two ago. Do you agree or disagree. What have your experiences been?
As a child,I was very shy and did not have many friends.I was shy because everytime that I wanted to express myself to my parents,I would get the "no backtalk!!" response. Therefore,I learned to keep my thoughts to myself. Besides, the bible does say that we have to honnor and to obey our parents.

One day, when I was of Junior High school age,I was reading a chapter in the book of Proverbs. It was Proverbs 18:24. It reads"A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly." This verse changed my life. I really felt as if that verse was wriiten especially for me. I had always wondered why I did not have a lot of friends. I interpreted this verse as saying,"S....IF you want friends......YOU .....MUST.... BE ....FRIENDLY!"

As an adult,I have little or no problem meeting people.People tell me,while acting surpised, how friendly I am. Of course, when I am on a new job,I am quite while "feeling people out". I do this to learn who I can joke with and who I cannot joke with. It is no fun telling a joke to someone who has no sense of humor,or someone who would take a joke the wrong way,and you wind up having to explain yourself to HR.

The best way that I have found to interact with a shy person is to ask that shy person a question that cannot be answered simply by a "yes" or a "no" answer. This reminds me of a trainee at Stanford who was very shy. One day his next trainer told him,"J....tommorow I will be training you.But you have to promise me that you will say MORE than TWO words." J...'s response was....." I'll try!"

As a child, I was outgoing and friendly then I went through a shy phase in high school, like extremely shy, days would go by at school when I would not talk to anyone. Then by my senior year, I had started coming out of my shell and being myself again. As Sharon said, it's not that people don't like shy people, it's just a lot of extroverts do not know how to talk to them. I am an introvert, please remember INTROVERT =/= SHY, but I am also outgoing now.
Funny story, the other day in my mission trip meeting my old youth minister jokingly said to me "I think I liked you better when you were quiet and in your shell" after I said something.

I have no idea if it's true. I am an introvert but I am also extremely shy. It makes it really hard to get to know people. Some have said that some of it is misunderstanding or not knowing how to respond to shyness, and I think that is true as well. I've noticed that sometimes if I don't speak to others then I can be fairly invisible. But some people have special talents for bringing out talking in even the shyest or most introverted people.
I have a tendency to assume that people don't like me all that much unless they tell me so. And I think other people may think I don't like them that much because of not being really talkative.

yeah a lot of my closest friends are introverts. And that's great! But...if they don't talk back at times, I often think they're upset at me or I did something wrong. I'm learning though!!
