The first Greek Orthodox Church which I attended shortly after my chrismation back in the mid 1990s had a policy that all children were to be in the crying room or at religious instruction during the Divine Liturgy. Since many children loved the cookies, donuts, milk and juice which were provided them along with the stories and creative activities, they learned to prefer these activities to the Divine Liturgy.
Fortunately, many parishes no longer have religious instruction during the parish Sunday Divine Liturgy, but they have rearranged their schedule so that children can attend Holy Services with their parents, and attend religious education classes either before the Divine Liturgy or immediately after reception of Communion or after the dismissal.

God grant him many years.

yeah, this is what I was thinking. plus, many Americans, for good or ill, follow celebs. it would be a good, and I think effective, way to get the word out.

If the above is accurate it implies that the world would be in a much worse state than it currently is without such prayers. Why is it that the prayers of monks make things better? What are they fighting against?

Yes, it's believed the prayers of all monks and nuns around the world are sustaining the earth. St. Silouan has said that without their prayers, the earth would have perished a long time ago.

Back in the late 1990's, hubby and I watched a video called, if I remember correctly, Greek Americans. And Orthodoxy was brought up in that because of the faith being mixed with and in the cultural aspect of Greek tradition and such. George Stephanopolous and Billy Zane were in it. I can't remember who else.

well because monastics fulfill St Paul's command to pray without ceasing. they are constantly praying for the salvation if the world, that God would have mercy on all of us, etc. they fight, more than anyone of us, against the sin and corruption of this world.
