Over the course of his life, Marco Rubio has prayed in Mormon sanctuaries, Catholic cathedrals and Protestant worship centers. But through each denominational transition, faith has remained a driving force through much of the young Florida senator's life. From the opening pages of Rubio's new memoir, An American Son, to the final sentence, an ongoing theme of Christian faith runs throughout the volume.
Rubio writes extensively in the book, which goes on sale Tuesday, about his devotion to faith, which he has experienced through a variety of traditions: A born Catholic who spent his childhood in Nevada attending services at the local Mormon Church, he convinced his family to return to the Catholic Church as an adolescent. After he married Jeanette Dousdebes, Rubio joined a Southern Baptist congregation and currently splits his time between the Protestant church and Catholic Mass. Probably nixes his chances at Veep candidacy. Putting someone who attended the Mormon Church as a child with Romney would be almost like double jeopardy.
And it isn't thought he'd help get the Hispanic vote that much....
A Cuban-American, born in the USA, may not be as similar to first generation Mexican and Central Americans as Republicans might hope.
I have no idea what Rubio's doctrinal beliefs are--if he goes to one church one week and another the next I guess he looks at them as interchangeable.

Huh? Just because he's prayed in Mormon sanctuaries, Catholic cathedrals, and Baptist worship centers? It's not like a person's Faith is defined by where a person prays. Probably nixes his chances at Veep candidacy.
Huh? again. The U.S. doesn't have a religious litmus test for election to office. Experience counts not religion. Oh all right, Rubio has about as much experience as Obama did when Obama ran for president, but the difference is that (if Rubio is chosen), he'll be running as the V.P. candidate. And it isn't thought he'd help get the Hispanic vote that much....
Well, actually, Rubio was working on a *permanent* solution to the children of parents who have decided to break the immigration laws of the U.S. Obama knew that, decided to "poison the well" by taking a political advantage by only offering a temporary solution, so Rubio seems to have *real* concerns for the Hispanic community (even the legal Hispanic immigrants and he actually notes their problems that this will cause) and the community knows it.

For a little while at least, until he got married.
Since attending a Catholic Church would be the popular move with his core constituency, who knows what he believes?
But I do think that there is a big difference between being raised as a Mormon in your formative years and "visiting a Mormon Church."
His Mormon ties might have been a key to his success in life--they really do take care of their own. It reminds me of the "cousins clubs" the Jewish community had in NY. Both work as nepotism networks.
Rubio's plan was far inferior to the President's plan in the eyes of the Hispanic community.
As a Cuban-American, I don't think he can really empathize with the plight of Mexican Americans. Cuban Americans had instant "refugee" status because they were fleeing Communism. Like the Bosnians in the 1990's, they were granted instant asylum.
And so every Cuban American had a free pass. They were even given housing on unused military bases until they got established or sponsored.
And so he can "sympathize" with the plight of Mexican Americans (as I do)--and who knows? He might.
But he can't empathize. Cuban Americans were never undocumented, unwanted, racially profiled and marked for deportation in places like Arizona....
His situation was different.

And most mexican-americans don't think Cuban's have a legit claim to the title "Latino" anyway.
And Rubio has go more than one skeleton in his closet.
The big one just why was his grandfather deported from the US anyway ?
And just how did he stay in the US until 1967 under a deportation order ? | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | | | |
