Reps: 2,974,719,445,387,221 (power: 2,974,719,445,390) | | | Senate Republicans Again Block Pay Equity Bill http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/06/us...ml?_r=1&ref=us A bill that would pave the way for women to more easily litigate their way to pay equality failed to clear a procedural hurdle in the Senate on Tuesday as Republicans united against the measure for the second time in two years.
...
Senator Mary Landrieu, Democrat of Louisiana, acknowledged Republicans’ central complaint — that the bill would create litigation and potentially onerous compliance issues for small businesses. But she said: “Where are these women supposed to go? What are they supposed to do? Have an appointment with their congressman? Show the congressman their paycheck?”
Explain to me why this bill wasn't passed? Are the Republicans trying to dig their own grave in relation to women's votes this coming November? It may have been a political "stunt" by the Democrats, knowing full well the Republicans wouldn't pass it, but is the GOP really that stupid? They seem to be more concerned with small business than women. That's a problem.

Should Republicans vote for a bill just because it's a political stunt and they don't want to look bad? I don't think so. |

What is your objection to this bill?

Just like the good Senator said, it opens up a whole new world of litigation that could be seriously detrimental to small businesses in particular |

Not if they choose to follow laws that already exist.
Basically, your argument is that it will be harder on businesses that choose to break the law by paying women less for equal work and experience.

That's the point. The laws already exist which means those who are discriminated against already have recourse. The law is unnecessary |

This law makes it easier to litigate violations.

You're right, women do tend to support Dems.

In Duke v Walmart, who stood to profit the most in a verdict against Walmart, the lawyer or Duke, the original complaintant?
If you really think easier litigation favors the victims over the players in the system you need to read a bit more. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | | | |
