Prayer Caring fro my best friend, what do i need to do

I have known my best friend for about 3 years before everything happened. Around her 20th birthday we went to a party and I caught her drinking. I expressed how unhappy i was with her and walked away, later on i found out she had walked from the party to her dorm which is very dangerous for a girl late at night. I decided to check on her before i went to bed and found her in a corner screaming afraid of something she was seeing. I called 911 because i was totally not in control of the situation, and she was speaking in what i believe is tounges the majority of the ride. They had to give her a shot to calm her down and put her to sleep. Inicially we thought someone put something in her drink but about six months later i intervened on her trying to commit suicide. She told me that ever since she got home from the hospital she saw dark shadows and heard voices. I did everything i could do to get her in touch with the right people to help. Life is proving to be very hard for us both, she is constantly discouraged because the only medicine that works for her is making her feel high or "not here." we live together because her parents and family are very religious and want to take her off the meds and told her her condition is caused because of her sin. I see her struggle and I have decided that i will be here for here no matter what. We have just recently given our lives back to christ, but she is still so very discouraged. Sometimes I fear she will take the wrong way out. I feel so hopeless. She still sees things and hears static but cnt function on her meds to the point where its effecting her schoolwork. I want to know is there anything else i can do? I pray for her every night, and monitor her pills, appts, and her eating. I just want to know if im doing all i can.

What a good friend you are! Educating yourself on this disorder is the best thing you can do right now for yourself and your friend, imo. Schizophrenia: Symptoms - MayoClinic.com

I think if you make a list of things you need to discuss with her when she is lucid will help you know you're going down the right path together? I agree with you both that medication is necessary for this disorder...and would contact the doctor who prescribes the medicine for help with encouragement and possibly have him/her talk to her parents so at least they know the medical aspect of this disease.

In a way--a very distant way-- all illness is a result of sin... the original sin. But truly we all have maladies that are not caused by anything we did wrong personally. I will pray that her parents are educated by someone they respect, and will come around to giving their daughter the support she deserves and needs.

Please take care of yourself. Read up on how to be a caretaker, and pay particular attention to how to do good self care for yourself. You've taken on responsibilities you didn't have to and I'm sure you want to stay as healthy as you can in the process.

Prayer

Thank u guys for the feedback. Today has been different, she is distancing herself from me. I will try and talk to her doctor and see if he can contact her parents because i know their support would mean the world to her. With being a college student from out of state, trying to get a degree in archetectual engineering, and taking the pills on top of everything, i just dnt want her to quit. I really appreciate this website, reading some of the posts helps me understand a lot more. You all are such strong individuals, and i am praying for you all. Keep your faith, cause I have faith that God can do all things.

Some medications are less sedating than others are. It depends on the person and how they respond to them. But I'm pretty sure, since it sounds bad, that it will get worse and worse without help. Psychosis is also scary, but the sooner she treats it the more likely she will recover over time from the symptoms. Sometimes it's hard as a friend to step in and help, but my intuition tells me you're a good friend for trying to show that mental illness exists. I am surprised that her parents think it's sin, that's really sad. They used to think DID sufferers were demon possessed when it is childhood trauma and serious abuse that triggers someone to create personalities in order to cope with the memories. I don't have DID but a friend does.

What a wonderful friend you are. Yes, find out all that you can about schizophrenia. But don't try to deal with it all on your own. No-one can possibly take all that responsibility. But your true Christian love shines out and it is wonderful to see that. I pray for your friend, and for you.
