An Atheists once said to me, 'Atheists help the hungry they just don't make them sit through a sermon before they get their sandwich', could that be true?
Should we do more and talk less? shouldn't we be known for our actions and not for our words?
Did Jesus make the people he healed promise to be Christians before he healed them? I don't think so.
Did he preach to them before he healed them? I don't think so. |

Great. Now, can you tell us which question that answers? |

Yes, some people have a Bible fetish (the poster then explained what they meant, and I pretty much agree) |

Of course we should all study the Bible and understand its message.
But these people go much further. They become obsessed. They spend excessive amounts of time pouring over the text. They take pride in how they have memorised so many verses. Thet spend ages cross-referencing, translating words, and immersing themselves in complex contextual arguements.
Sorry, but I fail to see how those are bad things (except for the "pride" part, of course).
It's interesting that, in the book of Hebrews, Paul rebukes them for not studying the scriptures enough, but here you are, telling us we should do exactly what Paul rebuked them for doing. But the sad thing is that they focus so much on the Bible and their mastery of it, that they no longer go out into the world and live as Christian examples.
Actually, according to the Bible, the love and study of God's Word is a "Christian example".
In a strange way, the Bible is more important to them than Christ or Christianity. You get the feeling that if they died and faced God, and God said to them that the Bible is mostly true, but there were five big errors that were caused by humans not transcribing God's word correctly...you get the feeling that our Bible lovers would say, "No God. That can't be. The Bible is inerrant and I'll prove to you using scripture that these were not errors"!
As I said, we should all study the Bible and hear its truth - but the Bible should not become an end in itself.
And what do you say if you die and stand before God and He tells you, "The Magisterium? Seriously??? Those guys had no idea what they're talking about!" What do you say? |
