After days of ridicule for launching a conspiracy theory-fueled investigation into Barack Obama’s birth certificate, Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett on Tuesday backed off his threat to keep the president off the ballot in November and apologized to his state.
Does any Republican on here support a birther like Bennett? How can an intelligent person agree with such an idiot? Doesn't support for Bennett tarnish the Repubican party? I would consider voting Republican if the party didn't have so many Bennetts and Palins. I realize that only the weird stories make headlines, but when higher-ups in the party refuse to rein in the idiots, one has to think that idiots are welcome.
Bennett actually isn't a Birther. He's often said that he believes Obama was born in Hawaii and that the birth certificate is legimate. He was just (foolishly) trying to appease a certain section of Arizona's population before he makes his own bid for the Governorship.
I don't know if Bennett is a good man or a bad man, but I'm sure he's learned a lesson from this.
I don't get it. If I go to apply for a government document or service and am asked to show a birth certificate, social security number or what have you, I show it.
So shouldn't a state require some sort of proof of requirements being fulfilled before putting someone on their ballot?
The fact that this whole issue is being decided simply in the court of public opinion, is a bit disturbing. Rule of law, not public opinion, should be the enforcer of the requirements to run for president.
