Reps: 10 (power: 0) | | | No need to argue about kinds of fat. The bottom line is that Americans eat too much and move too little. Our sedentary lifestyle is a great deal of the problem. |

Very true. I shouldn't be too picayune. Eat a little less, get out a little more. Weight loss and improved health will follow. |

I don't mean to nitpick, but there is an issue that I have with part of your post. Fat, just like protein and carbohydrate, is a macronutrient, or main essential nutrient source that the body needs to survive. In fact, consuming enough healthy fats are a good way to lose fat, believe it or not.
Generally speaking, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are the good fats to consume. Saturated fats should be consumed sparingly, and there is no recommended daily intake for trans fats.
Processed sugar is unhealthy, while natural sugar from, say fruits, isn't. And alcohol certainly isn't needed. In fact, the liver treats it as a toxin, which is why so many alcoholics end up with bad livers. It seems that the antioxidants in red wine are healthy though.

I agree (and Brits are not far behind).
I do believe a lot of people seem to have no idea about what is healthy. So many times I have overheard people say they will have a salad because it has the lowest calories yet you look at some of the ingredients its far from the low calorie meal they think they are eating.

Sorry, like I said I was nit picking. The health issue could really be explained through eating, sleeping and exercising (or lack thereof). And honestly, I don't think it's the amount of food that we eat that is necessarily the issue, it's the types of food we eat.
If one eats whole grains, fruits, vegetables and so on all day, they probably won't get fat because these health foods are generally lower in calories and are filling. The unhealthy foods are high in calories and are not very filling because they lack nutrients the body needs. So even after eating X unhealthy food, the body says "I need more nutrients!" and so one feels compelled to eat more.
So I would say, more specifically, the main issue for many people is lack of exercise and a poor diet. Eating all day=/=obesity. Eating a diet mainly consisting of unhealthy food=obesity. |

I certainly did NOT say that the government's recommendation was to cut out all fat - it is to keep the daily total between 20% to 35% total calories. I think your nitpick is a misunderstanding unless you think that more than a third of your diet should be fats.

That's certainly a good part of it - but there may be more.

The current standard that the CDC uses is pretty lame. According to them, a person who's 6 foot 2, 235 pounds is "obese".
