I agree that it would have been better for us to set up a single payer system that would have controlled the costs. Obamacare was the best we could do at this point.
Changing fee-for-service reimbursement would help quite a bit too. When your business model is set up so you make more money by selling more widgets, you sell more widgets.
In the healthcare system this means selling more drugs and tests and procedures that may not be medically beneficial.
Many doctors don't like the situation, but to keep the practice open they have to do things that are pretty stupid. My last doc used to have me come by for an appt every 2 months so I could keep getting my BP meds. There was no medical reason. It's just that he could bill the insurance company for a visit only as often as every 2 months for a diagnosis of hypertension.
Right now medical bills are the major cause of bankruptcy in the US. And it is these taxpayers and wage earners who can't get medical insurance that are going bankrupt. (Poorer people don't bother to file.)
Yes, it is. And there is some possibility our family may be in that position. We've always had an income that is spot on the median, we bought a house below our means, we do not buy pricey cars and if we buy new we keep them for 11-12 years. We don't spend money on lavish vacations, clothing, fancy dining out, or any of that nonsense. So it isn't our poor "choices" that got us here. We're overleveraged entirely because of out-of-pocket medical expenses for me and our daughter.
If we had a "choice" it was this -- my daughter and I could be dead.
We would not be having this problem in any other developed nation.
There are quite a few economic problems with the way we choose to deliver healthcare. One of them is having insurance tied to employers at all.

Wrong. Only 3% or Planned Parenthood's budget goes to fund abortions. Most of its funds (and all of its federal funds) are used for breast screenings, pregnancy tests, pap smears, contraception and prenatal care.
I don't think I've ever met someone who was actually pro-abortion. Why would someone want to "sell" a thing they would prefer never happen? Realizing that it's a last ditch effort sometimes doesn't mean anyone likes the idea.

To me, it makes a considerable difference whether I refrain from eating a certain food or drinking a certain drink because my taste buds do not agree with them - or whether a religion declares them taboo.
Given my disdain for authoritarianism and legalism, it shouldn't come as a surprise that I would never embrace the latter.
Christianity poses no problem for this, as all foods are declared clean.
What I have unfortunately discovered in Organized Religion is Peoples seem to become Self Sanctimonious and get apparently bored to lend themselves to pick at others and jump the bandwagon of misinformation and their gossip then thereby play God Themselves and Judge and generally mess with those that won't lend themselves to bow and scrape to their (Sanhedron self appointed straw boss selves). Which is unfortunate and turns Peoples off. Furthermore they play superstition example I know a Married couple of Really Nice Peoples that adopted two Mexican children and raised them GOOD. Then some peoples of the Church gossiped saying that God was punishing them by rendering them baren and could not refrain from (saying things) to that effect just to trouble the Really Nice Peoples Couple. Where as the Truth being they (the Really Nice Peoples raising two children "not their own") proved to Me to be Blessed by God but cursed by picking, pecking order obsessed gossips and trouble makers with gall enough to try to make problems for Really the Nicer Peoples. What is t be done to prevent that Sanhedron effect whereupon some people feel they are better than others and set themselves up as the Sanhedron of the Church and community with their self appointed ability to Judge and criticize those that don't recognize their obvious superiority in that "They have Children of their Own". That makes things look like False Religion where everyone forgets the Golden Rule and appoint themselves (Sanhedron Ruler Class) and dish out troubles for others to keep them beneath themselves, I could go on and on. What happens to Peoples ? They forget what they did to Date for instance and put down others for sitting at the pub looking for possible mates , "Heaven Forbid" they Never did such a thing, when in reality they did indeed that very same thing. What they did it different or because they did it righter than others because that was then and it was them ?

Same with Baha'i's, though I long ago noted quite a few of the Persian refugees would not eat pork if it was at a potluck. It's probably just not being used to it from the culture they were raised in. So I made sure to just bring something else anyway.
The one prohibition we have is against mind-altering drugs unless a doctor prescribes them. Which leaves alcohol out of the picture along with a few of the currently illegal things.
There are the usual recommendations you'd expect not to overdo eating (a.k.a. gluttony) and generally have a diet that is healthy for you. But it's not like there's a Food Police of any sort.

This is a point I have often made, and seen contradicted by Jews. I also point out that Christianity doesn't really tell us what it means, either ...
No, but some of the ideas in Christianity about what it means have been the inspiration for a whole line of zombie fiction. *hides*

Clearly you have not had to review some of the books I have had to review that some people thought of as "finished."
