If you asked this question 3 months ago I could've told you why I was a Christian. But now, a more relevant question would be: why are you no longer a Christian (in the canonical sense)?

1) I reject the trinity, it has irrational metaphysical and logical consequents that simply could not be posited by a Most Rational being

2) Christian dogma is propelled by political motivations since its early inception (not saying other religions aren't prone to this as well)

3) The idea of original sin has a poetic meaning, but surely not a more substantive role in the judgement of God's creation.

4) I don't believe that anything could mediate the relationship a human has with their Maker. God does not need intermediaries. He is All Knowing and All Seeing after all.

5) No human being walking this earth at the moment is holy, i.e. the pope and the likes.

That's really about as much as I can think, along with the abhorrence of idolatry (just look at a Mexican supermarket for clarification). I'm pretty sure I've converted to Islam already, not sure if I have enough strength to admit it yet.

What sort of Calvinist are you?

I was RCA, and we did the Apostle's Creed, Lord's Prayer, and the usual doxology every Sunday. I still go to the church when visiting mom -- they still do the same things like that, though perhaps they do the Nicene Creed with this current pastor.

None. My ascent with Calvin is a more recent thing since I left church. Romans 9 irrefutably proves Calvin was right. It's more of an intellectual position than me going to a church.

I was never raised religiously, got "born again" in my teens, left a while ago, found Calvin after that, though I disagree with a lot of it still.

Mom had me take piano lessons, because of course I was supposed to be the next church organist. Problem -- I don't like the organ and I was pretty much an atheist about a year after I'd started lessons, not that I told mom that.

At the time I preferred the classics. Well, I still do, actually.

But my studies to get the music degree gave me an quite an appreciation for church music.

Brass, huh? I forget aren't you a trumpet player? Don't tell my husband the trombonist if so, he will make awful jokes.

Me, I took up the baritone so we could do the family quartet. Mom's pastor is happy if we manage to turn up with the instruments for a visit, especially if it's around Christmas. Though the last time we also sang some old Latin hymns a capella.

You might want to try Assemblies of God. They have the best sound systems of anyone too. And I don't mean just the best for religious groups either.

You might've liked my first Baha'i community though. For the first year most of the members were local musicians (jazz mostly). I'm not sure if we had devotional gatherings as much as jam sessions. We coulda used a good percussionist.

Oh thanks! I did not realize that you had found Calvin's theology after you left a church community.

I was never raised religiously, got "born again" in my teens, left a while ago, found Calvin after that, though I disagree with a lot of it still.
Yes, there are still some things I agree with Calvin about, and others I don't. As my formerly RCC husband once remarked about Protestants, at least Calvin was one of the "thoughtful" Protestants. (Luther was one of the others he mentioned.)

I can't say I ever probed exactly why he thought that way, but since we're both Baha'is now it's kinda moot I suppose.
