Church ordered to stop giving away free water

Church Ordered to Stop Giving Away Free Water | FOX News & Commentary: Todd Starnes

Tipton said volunteers from his church were handing out free coffee and free bottles of water at two locations along a Mardi Gras parade route when they were stopped by Jefferson Parish officials. The church volunteers were cited for failing to secure an occupational license and for failure to register for a sales tax.
Goverment's got to get their cut of the action, even if the action is zero.
This church needs to pay for a business license to give away refreashments.
They will have to give money to the goverment before they can spend money on giving refreshment to people.

If they did not have permission of the owners of the property then it would be tresspassing, if it was on goverment land then they would need to rent the space. If they broke health rules, I could see it, But to require a vendor license for a non-profit?

Register for sales tax? They aren't selling anything, so there will be no sales tax.

I couldn't find a story that gave the actual reason why the church was told to stop so it's not really possible to know what the reason was nor the purpose of the specific law cited in the cease order.

There's not a lot one can do without a permit in a lot of places. All the non profits I've worked with always check into permits for ANY event or activity they planned. Sometimes free giveaways are only allowed if there's no advertising, sometimes if you are doing the give aways at sports events or parades the local government wants fees paid because of the costs of clean up. Sometimes you can't give away anything to be consumed without being certified as some type of commercial establishment as a reseller or food prep service.

I don't think of this as the same as the chronically overcited examples of children being told to stop selling lemonade (I think children need to be left alone, but if a cranky neighbor reports them and there is actually a law being broken the kids have to handle it.) Adults running an organization should be sufficiently aware of the fact that public events MIGHT require some type of permit and check into it.

I suspect that there was a reason attention was called to that church's activities, and once it was brought to someone's attention the appropriate action had to be taken.

I don't see how any African-American with any inkling of history can say that you don't have the right to live your life how you want to live your life.

When we start talking about equality and everyone being treated equally I don't want to to know an African-American who will say everybody doesn't deserve equality

I have to agree with the Jefferson Parish officials on this one. They should follow the appropriate procedures.

Actually in some areas you might be. Feeding stray cats in some areas is not technically legal. As an individual act its not something that's usually pursued, but if someone complains or a large group of people suddenly starts leaving lots of food and water out for stray cats they are also completely changing what's available near homes for rodents, raccoons etc... and there's a chance they will get told to knock it off or fined for their actions.

Like I said it all depends on your local laws..and who complains. I'm not saying the laws are right or wrong, well intentioned or stupid, just that if you find out about it you either accept you might face some sort of consequence and accept it until you work to change the law.

Unbelievable.

No wonder the Mexicans refer to the United States as el asilo insano del Norte....and it's getting worse. Pretty soon you won't be able to break wind in your own living room without obtaining a permit and buying a carbon credit from the government first.

You could be, for creating a nuisance. Be careful.

Some cities have ordinances against allowing pet cats to freely roam the neighborhood.
