You know things are bad when even Chris Matthews is taking our side...

Stay tuned. This story does seem to be getting traction. I noticed that CBS News ran the contraception controversy as the second item on tonight’s Evening News, and included an interview with CUA President John Garvey. An otherwise decent report was flubbed, however...

Yes, Chris Mathews doesn't want to see Obama lose on a technicality, either.

Obama has nine months till the election. At some point, if he didn't have to face an election, people might come around to his point of view...

That would be in 2014, perhaps....

Birth control would be fully covered for two years then...and chances are the abortion rate would fall dramatically, perhaps 20%, perhaps 25%, perhaps even more.

And the President could say, "That's what we wanted to do, decrease abortions."

I think that most people in the U.S. (and I am not necessarily one of those) would agree that 800,000 little martyrs to their mothers' immaturity and fear is an improvement over 800,000 little martyrs to their mothers' immaturity and fear plus another 200,000 little martyrs to the scruples of the religious right.

But the President doesn't have the luxury of a few years to show how many lives his mandate saved....

He can't afford to lose on a technicality.

Of course, that flies in the face of common sense. The contraceptive mentality is the gateway *to* abortion--it doesn't *discourage* it. Women are told that they have a *right* to decide not to be co-creators with God when it comes to human life. (They are supposed to be able to prevent the very reason God made man and woman.) So the woman takes contraceptives, but one month the contraceptive doesn't work (even the "pill" isn't 100% foolproof and condoms are only 80% foolproof). Anyway, since the woman still has been brainwashed to think she can "play" but not have any consequences, the logical choice is abortion. Planned Parenthood knows it--counts on it. Cha-ching for them. Misery for the woman. Death for the child.

"I guess I grew up watching movies like Becket and A Man for All Seasons and seeing the church and state go to war with each other and being told stories from the Old Testament about the Maccabees, about people, families being told you got to eat pork. The state requires you to do it. It gets to that interesting point to me, which is frightening, when the state tells the church what to do. And then the church can no longer teach. If the church teaches it’s morally wrong to use birth control, how can you make the teacher pay for birth control without losing their authority, their moral authority? That’s what the church is afraid of. If they start financing, under the law, what they are called to do, do they have any more credibility on the issue of birth control or anything else? That’s what I think is the concern here. It’s a political issue. I agree. If you can make them do it, they can’t teach it anymore." -Chris Matthews

America's hope for freedom can't afford for Obama to win. America was founded because people, especially Catholics, weren't free to practice their religion in England. Now because of Obama and the Democrats, here we go again.

So somehow this will DECREASE abortions? My head hurts.

It works in western Europe, where the per capita abortion rate is roughly 1/6 that of the U.S. (and where abortions after 12 weeks are almost always banned.)

But I know that it makes conservatives feel good to believe that if contraceptives did not exist there would be no premarital, extramarital, or gay sex; no venereal disease; no AIDS; and no abortion.

If contraception did not exist, "The 40 Year Old Virgin" would be the norm and "Sex in the City" would be renamed "Chastity in the City."

Yes, fantasies can be comforting, but living in a fantasy world is dangerous. But I recognize the emotional need for them, so, if they comfort you, fine.

So the end justifies the means.

I've heard that somewhere before....who said that?

Was it Joseph Goebbels, or Hermann Goering?
