I would ban Television product advertising during all programs other than on shopping channels together. I mean we pay for TV (cable, Satellite,etc) That would solve way more problems than you think. It would reduce the costs of many products as well. TV shows should not be sponsored (controlled) by big budget promoters, like automobiles, Wal-Mart or Proctor & Gamble, AT&T, or beverages, politics or any other so-called sponsor.

Events can continue with Pay Per View. You can have an informercial channel and an advertising channel-leave programming choices to the providers based on veiwer choice.
If you have a product worth buying it does not have to be promoted on a mass scale to sell.

Good article, but there is still evidence that most Americans still prefer innocent subject matter, and that too much sex in superbowl ads actually backfires on the advertiser.

Super Bowl 2012 Ads Get Racier - ABC News

Not according to the research gurus at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, who have been analyzing Super Bowl ads for more than two decades. They've found that spots with sexual imagery take a 10% hit in "likability" vs. ads without racy images.

"As a basis of comparison, imagine if you were a comedian and you knew your audience felt sexy jokes were 10% less funny than regular jokes," says Chuck Tomkovick, the marketing professor who oversees the study. "You'd tell them very judiciously." That analysis was based on years of results from USA TODAY's Ad Meter, a consumer panel that electronically rates Super Bowl ads moment-by-moment as they air.

While some of the biggest Super Bowl advertisers have spent millions on ads that exude sexual imagery, most viewers actually prefer to see ads with kids or animals. "The more you put sex in an ad, the less it is liked," Tomkovick says. "It's like using Botox but not having it work out.



Anyway, though, call me a prude, but I knew the ads were going to be more sexual than ever, which is 50% of the reason why I decided not to watch the game this year (other 50% because no interest in the Pats & Giants, and no interest in the halftime show). If an advertiser wants to reach me and my dollar, they're gonna have to do it in other ways. I don't have any money, and I'm not likely their target audience, though, so I suppose they don't care.

The commercials really sucked this year. The Drew Brees' one was cute and so was one of the Doritos and the Bud light one with the dog fetching the beer, but over all they sucked and where was the Pro life ad? Didn't see it.

I thought the pro-life ad was only supposed to be on in some states, not all of them. Maybe you lived in a state that didn't get it?

I liked the one with the vampires. Showed it to my students today.

My students, however, think the puppy bowl is stupid. This just confirms my long-held suspicions that my students have questionable taste.

I am not American and had a quick look at the Madonna half time show and thought it awful. I am so glad that it was on at a time in Australia when most people were at work and school. I don't know about the other ads but the half time show has been getting all this attention over here since that Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction " some years ago.

Our own football Grand Final is great to watch but nowhere near as commercial.

The problem with that is that, even though people do pay for channels, it still doesn't bring in nearly as much money as advertising. Cutting advertising entirely would also block the very poor or those who just don't want to have cable or satellite from getting television channels entirely, except for maybe a government-sponsored news program or two.

In the end, advertising isn't all bad. Some advertising is actually pretty good. I think that too much sex in advertisements, in reality, probably does just make it seem stupid and like something no one would ever actually want to buy. I know that it doesn't exactly make me want a product.
