Soundwave … the original Soundwave. Was any Transformer as amazing as he? I always wanted Soundwave, I honestly can’t remember NOT wanting Soundwave. A few months after I got Prowl some other stores in town picked up on the idea of selling Transformers. Kens store mainly. This was a local … umm … well, everything store. They kept their Transformers way up high on a display shelf, and every time I went to this store I stood there, just staring up at all of them. And Soundwave was the one I wanted, more than anything else … Soundwave.
Soundwave was amazing, he was big, at the time he came out I think he might have been the biggest Transformer. And the things he came with, oh man. Not even counting Buzzsaw, Soundwave still came with transforming weapons (yeah, that’s semi-common now, but back then… definitely not. Both of them became his batteries and then fit into a compartment on his back. His regular gun was cool enough, being a big blue and silver blaster thing, but then he also had a shoulder gun, a shoulder GATLING gun. The only thing that could have topped that is if he had come with two shoulder Gatling guns, but then he would have three guns and they wouldn’t fit in the little back compartment and that would just be sad. Oh and there’s one special thing that put Soundwave over the top. His head IS the Decepticon logo, okay, okay, the eyes were changed slightly but the logo was definitely derived from his head, if that doesn’t demonstrate his amazingness, nothing will.
But … but … he becomes a mini-tape recorder (always known as a walkman to all the kids of the time)?? It doesn’t matter! That was cool too. It was about the size of a real walkman! It had buttons! You could put the weapons in the back! You could put Ravage or Laserbeak inside of the opening cassette door! Okay, he didn’t fly or drive and he didn’t have weapons in that mode, but it didn’t matter, ‘cause he was Soundwave and he was the coolest … ever. But, that opening cassette door? Yeah, it was cool, definitely, but … most of the time you find a used Soundwave, he’s gonna look like this.
That happened to mine, though it broke at the hinge, so I could at least set it back in place and he would look okay, but still, that cassette door was fragile.
What was he like in the cartoon and comics? Well …
He was pretty much the definition of cool. I mean, he actually sounded like a robot, just pure robot, there was no actual human voice there. And he said things like “Soundwave superior, Constructicons inferior” and “All talk, No shock” whilst battling with Blaster. To put it in musical terms, Blaster was mainstream radio hip hop, where as Soundwave was dark, mechanical industrial, probably from Germany or Belgium with songs about hunting down and killing people. Character-wise he was very unemotional, but also very loyal to Megatron, making him stand out among characters like Starscream, Shockwave and the Dinobots.
Toy Rating: 10 (Soundwave was big, cool looking, tough looking, could hold a cassette and actually had some pretty good articulation. The accessories were great and his face is classic Decepticon. Plus he came with Buzzsaw. This toy was amazing.)
Coolness Factor: 10 (Soundwave was THE cool Transformer. Everyone wanted him, everyone loved him in the comic and especially the cartoon)
Personal Rating: 10 (If you read the above stuff you already know what I think about Soundwave )
(note: I don’t really like Family Guy much, but Soundwave makes a cameo appearance. He Talks about how he met his wife (named Denise) in a Christian chat room. I found that kinda funny).

I know they are somewhat girly, but maaaan, I wanted a glow worm when I was little. I mean, it lit up, how cool is that? I loved toys that did cool stuff like that.
well my son had one of those little ones that you put up to the light and it glowed at nite for awhile , he took it to bed with him , he did not have the actually doll one
Hey, it’s Stratos, no one remembers Stratos, but I liked him quite a bit. When I was a kid my mom had kidney failure and had to go on dialysis and all that fun, exciting stuff. Well right before she found out she became pregnant with my youngest sister and because of the health risks and all that she stayed in the hospital for several months while pregnant. During this time dad would go to the hospital after work every night and then come home late and go to work the next day and on and on. Well, during this time my brother, my sister and I stayed at our grandparent’s house. This was not fun, I loved my grandparents and I loved spending the night at their house when I was little but being there every day for an extended period of time and being away from home and my friends and parents and all that definitely took a toll on me. Occasionally dad would bring a toy home for us, not often but sometimes and one of those toys was this one. My brother got a MotU figure as well, but I don’t remember which one.
Why are there no words on there?? Oh well, I think it said something like “Stratos soars over Skeletor” or something like that. Anyway, it’s a pretty nice card back, it has that standard look of the early ones, nothing to mind blowing going on, but it’s still pleasant to look at.
That’s not what my Stratos looked like!
That’s better. Yes there is a color variant in Stratos. I believe the one I had (with the blue wings) was the original and later on the colors were swapped and his wings were red. I don’t know why they did this, but it always confused me as a kid. In the cartoon he had red wings, but whatever, I liked the blue wing look the best. I like Stratos a lot; his coloring is cool, blue, red and gray with the dark read aviator type hat on and his eyes looking like goggles. Oh and he has a beard too. The only real fault is that he didn’t come with a weapon, that’s always sad, but he did have wings, so that was good.
So, what about the cartoon? Hmm, I don’t really remember. He was on it, but not as much as one might thing. He had his own “people” and while I don’t think he was the leader I think he was somewhere up there in the chain of command or something. The only episode I remember really well that featured Stratos was the one where Prince Adam used some mechanical thing that attracted flying creatures and yes indeed here comes Stratos to save the day. I’m sure he was on other episodes but I don’t remember them as well.
Toy Rating: 8 (I liked the toy quite a bit, his only real flaw being the afore mentioned lack of weaponry. Also I doubt those little wings could really cause Stratos to fly, but oh well, who cares about that when you are a little kid.
Character Rating: 7 (I can’t really remember him on the show very well, but I always liked him anyway, I’m not exactly sure why, but he always seemed kind of calm and wise and all that stuff to me, I always liked that in a character)
Gimmick Rating: NA (Stratos is another of those early toys before Mattel felt the need to make all of the characters do something weird.)
Personal Rating: 8 (quite cool, really wish he had come with a weapon though.)

Ehh, it kinda depends, some are and some aren't. If they are broken, then not really, the best you could do is sell them on ebay for parts. If they aren't broken and the main body is in good shape, then it depends on how rare or desirable they are (ie: if it's a GI Joe "bad guy" like a Viper or Crimson Guard, that might be a good one to pick up because those are "army builders" and are pretty much always in demand. For Transformers there really aren't any army builders but the older, bigger figures can be worth more, especially if they were on the cartoon a lot). Anything that has the accessories is going to go for more, in some instances the accessories are worth more than the figure (there is a tiny little microphone that goes with a GI Joe tank driver that all on its own sells for $75+). If you find ANYTHING still in the package grab it. Anything still sealed will go for a lot.
In general from what I have seen Transformers tend to be the most expensive with GI Joe second. Masters of the Universe aren't usually super expensive. M.A.S.K. toys can go for a lot, but definitely make sure everything is there and not broken.
There are some "toy scalpers" that buy all the new stuff from stores and immediately put them up on ebay or amazon for 2 or 3 times what they bought them for. Don't do that, those people are evil. :p
