Right there with ya, although sadly there are many who feel the X-Men saga/series is meant to convey a homosexual agenda due to how the movies have conveyed things...and thus, X-Men parties are considered to be corrupt..if you recall some of the things brought up in the thread entitled The Gay X-Men . I hate that! People want to confine the X-Men to homosexuality, when in fact, it's a lesson for any suppressed group. Kevin Smith, the comic book writer and actor, made this same mistake when giving a discussion about comic book movies (it was mostly played for humor, but it seems that he believes X-Men are an allegory for homosexuals).

It's certain that Stan Lee's original idea fell into the broad category of "outsiders" vs the ignorant world.

You could as easily say it's about Christians encountering intolerance.

Personally? I don't see X-Men as an allegory for anything in particular. When I read about Professor X's philosophies pitted against those of Magneto's, it's nice intellectual food, but the main course is the awesome superpowers which ignite a child-like interest. I simply enjoy the story I'm reading (or watching).

It's certain that Stan Lee's original idea fell into the broad category of "outsiders" vs the ignorant world.

If most people were aware of the history behind how X-Men developed, they'd be shocked.....and alot of the claims about it being an attempt to discuss homosexual issues would be laid to rest.

Growing up, everytime I saw it, it reminded me of issues of discrimination/racial injustice and the dangers of what happens when one becomes a reverse-racist as opposed to seeking peace. Their characters always seemed to have depth.......especially as it concerns the relationship between Eric and Charles.

What fascinated me more so than anything else was how much it seemed very much like a reflection between the struggle for being proud of one's ethnicity and knowing how to address that. Wasn't surprising to see that whenever the battles between Charles (Professor X) and Eric (Magneto)/their respective sides would come up, in light of how the background of X-Men developed during the Civil Rights era and the days of Martin Luther King and Malcom X---one side for integration and the other for segration, one side feeling like differing groups could work together and another side feeling as if it could never work ( more here, here , here , here and here )

Many are not aware of how comic book creators Stan Lee and Jack Kirby had indeed come up with the X-Men concept while following the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements of 1960s that unfolded daily on their television screens.

Moreover, it turns out that the authors of the X-Men series were Jewish men (more shared here and here and here)---originally hiding their Jewish heritage by changing their names so that they could introduce ideas into a populace that initially would not have cared/taken it easy if hearing from people that they already hated since ALOT of anti-semitism existed at the time. It made a difference for Stan Lee to change his original name of 'Stanley Martin Lieber'..and for Kirby to change his name from Kurtzberg. For Kirby, one of his reasons was that he wanted originally to be able to sell his work to a number of different publishers at once under different names.

For to make a series explicitly on the struggles of Blacks/Jews in the 1960-1970s would be no small task. They were two white men who decided to tackle the oft-neglected problems of racism in America through the pages of fiction and symbolism (being certain in the racially charged 1960s to even use all white characters).

For more, an excellent article on such can be found under the name of Black Politics, X-Men, White Minds 05/08/2003 or Mutant Readers, Reading Mutants: Appropriation, Assimilation, and the X-Men....

Being a person of color (Black Hispanic), the film franchise of X-Men was always the saga I could relate to the most out of all other comic books since it so touched upon REAL life issues/themes that always hit home for me growing up and seeing it in action. Moreover, the series seemed to always boast more individual heros who happened to be blacks (i.e. Storm, Bishop, etc)---with the mutant struggle echoing/sharpening the battles they experiences that blacks already had with being discriminated against in society.

If for no other reason, I'll support the series for that reason....

And On a side note, with other comics, it seemed like there were not alot of black superheros at the time X-Men developed...and they've just recently tried to address it. It has really caused a firestorm for many to see how the New Spiderman is now a Black Hispanic (more discussed here, here, and here)--although the new one, sadly, will be Gay alongside being a hero of color:

Some have noted how many black superheros were never discussed explictly within comics due to how others would use differing colors to represent minorities, such as discussed by one kat when sharing how green/different colored people can sometimes translate as “ethnic”..seen best in her article entitled Green=ethnic, part 2: A better defense. There are others who've sought to address the issue in discussing the history of black supeheros/sharing where many are hidden while others are being reimagined..such as others like "Green Lantern" being made into a black version in recent comics and others. One excellent resource is found under the name of "BlackSuperhero.com" One brother actually tried to speak in-depth on the subject, as seen here:

You could as easily say it's about Christians encountering intolerance.
In many ways, indeed, you could say it was about Christians facing intolerance..

I was always shocked whenever they'd bring up mutants and show them to be people of faith---as it brought home the reality of how different things could be for others who had to deal with persecution on multiple fronts...both physical and spiritual.

Personally? I don't see X-Men as an allegory for anything in particular. When I read about Professor X's philosophies pitted against those of Magneto's, it's nice intellectual food, but the main course is the awesome superpowers which ignite a child-like interest. I simply enjoy the story I'm reading (or watching).
The powers that're displayed are truly something you have to simply enjoy....although what occurred with Professor X in his philosophies pitted against Magnetos/others was something that was far from being about entertainment only...if seeing the reasons behind why they did as they did.

Please forgive me for nitpicking but the term "reverse racist/ism" really bugs me. A racist is a racist, regardless of their ethnicity or perceived justification for their racism.

Just came into awareness of others with Catholic faith that seemed to be in conflict with their beliefs...such as Hellboy (demon), Green Lantern, Iceman, Robin, Azrael, The Hulk, Punisher, Huntress and Gambit. Some of them are Jewish Catholic--which is another category altogether (in regards to Hebrew Catholics)---but it's interesting to see how many have been known to be represented as either bending the laws, pushing the lines or going through severe times of personal chaos in their spirits. Not certain if the writers intended for Catholics to be portrayed as such...

The most intense (and I'd dare say, troubling) portrayal of Catholic comic figures with conflict is Sara Pezzini, who exercises special powers given to her by the magical witchblade (an instrument originally possessed by the Vatican)...from the "Witchblade" series---as many Catholics were greatly upset about the ways that they had pagan overtones in the series combined with the Catholic faith (more discussed here and here )---some of it seeming essentially akin to what happens in places like Mexico whenever there are spiritual aspects combibned with the faith.

And then there's another feminine hero...known as The Magdalena, employed by the Catholic Church---one who has apparently worked with Witchblade...addressing issues that connect somehow with how comic book writers percieve the Catholic Church. Sara [Witchblade] was raised Catholic, and Patience [the Magdalena] is the warrior for the Church (more discussed here).

Makes you wonder if perhaps it'd be good to have Orthodox--be it Eastern Orthdox, Oriential Orthodox or Byzantine Catholics--portrayed when seeing the ways that they seem to portray others within the Ancient Faith.

But then again, it's not really surprisng to see how it happens.
