I have just recently started taking care of a new foster kitty. She is about 2 or 3 years old. Very nervous and shy. May have been some abuse as a kitten. Very sweet once she is comfortable with you. But she does not meow. It looks like she tries, she opens her mouth and a very, very faint "mep" comes out. She also makes kind of a squishy sounding gulp at times. She can purr normally, and very loudly when eating.
I am wondering if anyone else have ever encountered anything like this. I have had pet cats all my life and have fostered kitties for years, but have never had a case like this.
It will come! I saw this in a feral mommy. It could be she isn't used to human kindness..I am sure if she was locked in a room she could meow. Nerves is right,
I have this still in a cat who is over 3 years old. I have accidentally stepped on her tail and boy did she cry. Other than that, like hardly any noise. She is part Siamese as well.

I adopted a pregnant cat a few years ago, and she had three kittens. They were perfectly healthy, but one (Who's just the most relaxed, cuddly kitty... ^-^) rarely meows. He'll meow if someone steps on his tail or if he's trapped somewhere, but not much other than that. Some cats just don't seem to meow
Update, we had her throat checked out by a vet, and did an over all exam and found no problems. But finally she had started to meow a bit. It's not loud but it is louder than what she was doing her first week or so. And she has stop making that squishy sound as well.
We got our rescue cat, Lily, about one and a half years ago now. She was only about one year old when we got her, and had just had a litter of kittens.
We think that she may have been abused as well, because when we first got her any tiny noise made her frightened...her eyes would go wide and she'd run away. Also she was very scared of people walking up/down stairs and the sound of opening/closing doors and would watch and run away as soon as they got close. She also barely meowed and would open her mouth but no noise or a very small noise would come out.
One and a half years later, she still isn't a cuddly cat but she's not so jumpy. She is also a lot more vocal and you can hear her meows clearly...especially when it's time for food! It took a few months for her to become vocal so I'm sure as your cat is already meowing a bit louder she'll become more vocal in time

Valentine is like that. We got him at the local shelter as a little kitten. He is very shy (or should I say terrified) around strangers, but extremely loving towards us. He's around 2 or 3 now and does meow, but very rarely. His meow doesn't sound normal at all either , but he has a very loud purr. Some cats are just not that talkative. Another thing about V is that he tries to bury his food and water
