Hi, there is this popular website called Newgrounds.com.
It is mainly a hosting site for Flash Video Games and Animations.
I have been on it for years and it has been one inspiration to develop Flash Video Games, or just Video Games in general. Flash is a good place to start with games though, they are the easiest to develop.
Although being a Christian, I have ideas about making games with a Christian message, or at least something different, but with a high caliber of craftsmanship.
The thing is though the past months Ive felt like I should post on their forums and really get to know who I am dealing with, and who will be playing them before I start.
I have posted various threads about Christianity and Atheism. The community there does not take lightly to this type of talk and my threads or any 'religion' thread in general is almost always locked or deleted. I find this ironic though because they will help me with my video game development questions.
Newgrounds' slogan is 'Everything by Everyone', although now I find this to not be true at all, they are extremely biased, and most of them are Atheists, or at least Agnostic.
So now, I feel that I am at a crossroads here on what to do next, as I have dreams of making video games, at least for fun, but I do not want them to get crushed.
I don't know what career level you're at, but there are companies that hire help desk staff for gaming -- that would bring you closer.
Colleges offer gaming design, usually with different degrees for the IT and graphics aspects.
The important thing to remember -- these projects are huge, and require a team. If you don't gather other people to join with you, time will slip away and something similar will be on the market by the time you finish. Find out how to get investors, how to set up a business, how to obtain staffing and accounting support.
Look into what's already out in Christian gaming. There will also be a market for educational games, especially with different levels of homeschoolers and Christian schools.
Getting crushed is the natural consequence of stepping out. Just do it anyway. Look at how torn apart the political candidates get... how musicians get mocked. Putting yourself out in public means you will have critics and enemies. You will even have lawsuits, but put obstacles aside and figure out how to deal with them, instead of allowing them to deal with you.
Most gamers are atheists and are hellbound. They don't understand the things of GOD because Satan has blinded their eyes (under God's control of course). You're wasting time trying to get into an evil industry like this one. Entirely worldly garbage.
Why not enter the ministry and preach the truth to these lost souls instead of trying to entertain their wicked hearts?

If God has placed a calling toward game design in Kermit's heart, who are you to question it?

Right, so I expected negative response, I was hesitant to even post here, but so be it. I've been a Christian and in the Church Ministry for 5 years now. I have jumped through all of the hoops, I have walked the walk for the most part. At this point by now, I would already be in South Africa doing what you said. Ive prayed for years about this and I don't think this is the plan for me. I've had several members from different churches tell me one day I would have a company. I don't even like or play video games in general. I have dreams all the time of these weird video game images. I have been researching for years on how to get involved in this field here. I feel extremely compelled to do it, and have all these characters developing in my head.
Go to DeviantArt, I'm sure you'll find a better variety of people who'll be willing to play your games, despite the Christian context, sure, you might get some hate but it's a more...open community.

Do not pity the dead, Harry. Pity the living, and, above all those who live without love.
