Glad to hear it - start spreading the word!

I've beaten my head against the wall sometimes when I tell a Windows user about Linux, the ease of use with a distro such as Ubuntu and the mainly trouble free experience - do they listen?

To most people, Windows is what has to be installed. Many out there are unaware of a choice (other than Apple) of operating systems and this is usually at a cost, both financially and usability.

I don't know really what Linux is or Ubuntu or how to install or uninstall very well. Will that fix the backspace thing? I'm a bit lost now..

EPHESIANZ is right we are like abused women who think we have to have Windows and we keep coming back to it-to scared of the unknown...even if it might be better.

I've had windows 7 for a couple months on a netbook, and i think it really
sucks. had a netbook previously with xp that was great until it got a virus which none of the online repair people could fix.
7 is very slow, and does annoying things like never remember how i like folders layed out (as a list) Everytime I open a folder I have to again tell it I want it displayed as a list. Also this netbook has 2GB ram which evidently isn't enough as even typing this- the sentence will be completed by me a few seconds before it finally shows up onscreen.
XP was SO much better.

I would go with a Brother, too, but I doubt you'll be able to find a laser that is both a printer and copier for under $100. You can certainly get a good Brother laser printer for under $100, but you'll probably need to decide how important the copying function is to you.

Anyway, I'm thinking of buying another xp OS and replacing windows 7 with that, as it was perfect on my other netbook.
Are there likely to be problems from doing this? (other than almost doubling the cost of the netbook)
Sorry for a late reply.

No, no problems. Many people "downgrade" to XP. Also, I would ditch Real, etc, and use something like VLC for all the media. I have an Acer netbook (several of them, actually) and this setup works fine.

Other things you can do are: go into MSCONFIG and disable any startup processes you don't need; install the max 2GB RAM. With these steps, you may be fine with Win7. My netbooks are - though I must admit, XP flies on those little machines.

This sounds like a focus problem. In the browser, when the focus is in a text box, the backspace key acts as it does in a word processor. But when the focus is on the web page, it acts as a navigator. The trick is that hitting the Tab key will take you out of the text box and onto the next page element (which often is the Post control button - you'll see it highlighted if you experiment). So make sure you're not hitting the Tab key inadvertently, or hitting the touchpad as you type. If it's a touchpad problem, a little free utility called TouchFreeze will solve the problem. The more I think about it, the more I suspect the touchpad.

There also are browsers, and extensions for browsers, that will remember the text you typed if you accidentally navigate away. For instance, I just tried it here, in Opera, and when I came back the text was there waiting for me.

Let me say this once, and then duck for cover: IE is not the only browser in the world. It is not synonymous with surfing the Web. IMO, it's about the worst major browser out there.

Also, there is a Fn key on the laptop keyboard that shifts many of the keys to alternate functions, which you will see on the keys in a different, lighter color. Make sure you're not hitting that one inadvertently either.

I have scoured the internet, I have reinstalled the operating system, I have uninstalled various software and still I have not found a solution as to why Windows 7 freezes randomly. I have some ideas as to what might be causing it, but I would need to test those ideas on three or four new computers with various hardware installed. I have five PCs and a laptop in my house, and with the exception of one I have Windows 7 installed on all of them. Unfortunately four of my computers are 7-9 years old and my theories as to what is causing the freezes wouldn't work on them. The freeze does not occur on any of my older machines.

Older PC specs:
  • CPU - AMD Athlon 64 1.8GHz single core (on two machines) Windows 7 Home and Ultimate installed
  • Motherboards - Gigabyte and Asus - VIA chips
  • Video Cards - nVidia 6800 and 7800GT - both AGP
  • Memory - both have 2GBs of RAM PC400 from Kingston
  • CPU - AMD Athlon XP 1.8GHz single core - Windows Vista Home installed
  • Motherboard - Asus - VIA chips
  • Video Card - ATI Rage - AGP
  • Memory - 1.5GBs of RAM PC400 from Kingston
  • CPU- AMD Athlon 64 X2 2.2GHz dual core - Windows 7 Professional installed
  • Motherboard - ASRock - AMD chips
  • Video Card - nVidia 7900GT - PCIe
  • Memory - 4GBs of RAM PC400 from Kingston
Newer PC specs:
  • CPU - Intel Q9300 2.5GHz quad core - Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows XP installed on same HD but separate partitions.
  • Motherboard - MSI - nVidia chips
  • Video Card - nVidia 8800GT - PCIe
  • Memory - 8GBs of RAM PC800 from Kingston
None of the older machines freeze when Windows 7 is installed. The only machine that freezes is the one with the Intel CPU. The CPU is not the cause though, because if you google you will see that many users are having the problem with AMD machines as well. All the older machines listed above have Adobe Flash and Klite codecs installed. One of my theories was that Adobe Flash or some codec was causing the problem. With the codecs installed the freezing occurs more frequently, but when I perform a fresh install of the OS without any codecs the freeze still occurs, just not as frequent. I am beginning to think that the problem only manifests when a particular combination of hardware and Windows 7 are installed. My reasoning is that not everyone is having the problem, even though they have the same software installed. I haven't seen the problem on laptops yet, which is very interesting. There are seven different laptops (all with Windows 7 installed) in my wife's family, and none of their users have reported this problem. I'm thinking the freezing has to do with a certain type of CPU (more than two cores) or RAM (DDR2 and above) in combination with the operating system.

I love Windows 7, and I think it is the best operating system Microsoft has produced to date, but the freezing is driving me nuts. If it weren't for OneNote, Photoshop and some games that I am very fond of, I would switch to Linux Ubuntu in a heartbeat.

I agree with you. You obviously aren't a Windows rookie, and you've got a great post for someone to be able to help you. I suggest posting it to www^sevenforums^com -- if anyone can help you it will be from there. The only thing I can think of is to force it to take a crash dump when it's frozen and then analyze the dump (neither of which I know how to do). Good luck.

Nuclear,

Have you checked Event Viewer for fatal errors? (Computer/manage).

And if there's a blue screen you can turn off automatic restart in order to capture the message. (Control Panel/System/advanced/advanced. Make sure logging is enabled here, even for the event viewer above.)

If Not for Grace,

You may be able to solve the focus problem simply by going to control panel / mouse / hardware, and backing off on touchpad sensitivity.

Unfortunately getting a crush dump doesn't working with this problem. Before Windows 7 can compile anything on the source, the system just freezes. Nothing works after that, and the only way to unfreeze it is to perform a cold restart of the computer. I've looked around in other forums, and there are many people with this problem, and there are many people with possible solutions, but none have worked. My only alternative is to study which users are not having this problem, and purchase the hardware they are using. That is an expensive solution, but when you are working an hour on a project in Photoshop and the system freezes, that is unacceptable.

After studying this anomaly I'm thoroughly convinced it is not the fault of the OS alone, but a combination of hardware and software that users are installing.

@ dysert
Searching on SevenForums, there are at least 10 pages of topics about Windows 7 freezing. Another post on the subject would go unnoticed.
