Best bed for pain?

I have a pillowtop which is too firm. For years I suffered with bad hip and leg pain, then I got an air mattress and put it on top of the bed. After experimenting with the air pressure, I found a softer sleeping surface made a HUGE change. If I go out of town or on vacation I now bring the air mattress with me. I have an electric pump and quick deflation so it doesn't take long to setup or breakdown and you put it on whatever bed is there. I thought I'd share this because people spend a fortune trying to find a good bed when a good air mattress will do the trick. Try it.

What are you sleeping on and do you like it?

I fell asleep on my 7 year old's futon, which is hard, and woke up in the middle of the night with stabbing pain in my hip and a numb leg. Most of the hip and leg pain originates in the lower back where compressed discs pinch the nerve running down your hip and leg. I've had a few air matresses but the Coleman has never had a leak and deflates in a few seconds. It also has the valve which doesn't flow back so you can adjust pressure easily. I spent years waking with hip and leg pain so it was nothing short of a miricle that a 30 dollar queen size air mattress changed my ability to get a decent night sleep. Play with the firmness until you wake with less or no pain. It is a little weird at first because it's a different feel. The electric pump is about 12 bucks I think and a must have. Unless you have a 7 year old who jumps on it the bed, it will last a few years if not forever. I'm on my third in 4 years. One night off it and you can feel the difference. Pleasent Z's.

Couple years ago we gave up on our adjustable air bed...to saggy. The Lord provided us with some funds from work comp settlement and we dropped a little over 3k on a pocketed coil mattress. The pocketed coils reduce the pressure points which have helped with my shoulders and hips. Its very hard for me to sleep anywhere other than home.
There is a company here in So Cal called Custom Comfort that makes all their mattresses locally and you can go to the factory to see how they make it. They are Christian owned and advertise on KWVE a christian radio station. I am a skeptic at best and went there very unsure...they took good care of us and we have been quite happy.

They showed us how most mattresses are made and its no wonder your pillow top is a killer...most manufactures only want to make a buck. If you are not in So Cal you can go to their site and at least educate yourself and maybe they could give you a referral for a company that has the same standards.

I think the key is getting support evenly and avoiding pressure points. Women have hips so that must present an extra challenge. In a way the pillowtop prevents the springs from filling the small voids that need stabilization. I'm sure there are some good manufacturers. I needed something portable so the air mattress filled the need.

We had a select comfort mattress that was always wonderful for us...it was dual control so my husband could have the soft and I like the firm. But it ended up dying on us...So we bought a tempurpedic and I would say over all we enjoy it. My husband thinks it too firm so he just got one of those eggshell foam things and it really did make it a bit more comfortable. I also use the tempurpedic pillow as well...even though that is a whole other problem with my neck...it's the best that I can find so far.

Yeah, I find that my lower back is most probably the trigger point of the pain in my hips and legs. I radiates down to my toes. I have been blessed with a good matress. It has a layer of memory foam on top of the coils and is a happy-medium when i comes to firmness. When I stay at a hotel the bed is firm but comfortable but I wake up in pain regardless of what I sleep on. I'm constantly moving all night long. And yes as you said above, I think avoiding pressure points is extremely helpful.

The egg shaped foam underlays really help for softness and joints not being pressured into the mattress, as a quick and cheap fix this is what I've done. But pillows, I can't find any type of pillow that doesn't throw my neck out? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks
