Christian physician praying for atheist's healing

Collins grateful for Hitchens' friendship

Christians around the world joined forces Monday to pray for writer and outspoken atheist Christopher Hitchens, who is battling esophageal cancer.

Beyond his work as a journalist, Hitchens authored "God is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything" and described Mother Theresa and Billy Graham as frauds.

Some prayed for him to be healed. Others prayed for salvation. Still others for a quick death and subsequent damnation.

Christian physician Dr. Francis Collins, a Staunton native and director of the National Institutes of Health, contributed to the Washington Post's "On Faith" column, humanizing Hitchens.

"Despite the 'enfant terrible' reputation, Christopher has a warm humanity that is easy to perceive. And his willingness to be utterly open and transparent about his cancer diagnosis provides a breathtaking window into his personal integrity," wrote Collins, who debated faith with Hitchens at a mutual friend's house several years ago.

Since Hitchens's cancer diagnosis, Collins, who leads the Human Genome Project, has offered him insight into experimental cancer treatments that could help. Collins wrote the two have not spoken about faith in recent months, but Hitchens knows he's praying for him.

Despite their differences, Collins wrote that he is grateful for Hitchens' friendship.
