Actor Corbin Bernsen Talks About the Faith

Perhaps best known for his role as the skirt-chasing lawyer on ďL.A. LawĒ, Corbin Bernsen recently wrote and directed a straight-to-DVD release of the faith-based film Rust. It tells the story of a pastor who has lost his faith but rediscovers it while trying to defend a friend who has been accused of a crime. Bernsen spoke to me last week about the film and about his own rediscovery of faith. Here are some excerpts from our conversation:

What faith expression did you grow up with?

We were Christian Scientists. That was my Sunday school and the church we went to. Christ has been there, as far back as I remember.

What led you to write the faith-based film Rust?

The journey to God is constant. I donít know if we can ever get close enough. I havenít always flexed that muscle.

After my fatherís passing two and a half years ago, I was sitting with his bag of ashes and realized I didnít understand where he might be. That led to bigger religious questions: Is there heaven, hell, God, evil? It opened me up to an incredible philosophical discussion. I feel that part of Godís journey for me is to bring back people who want to explore that.

Faith helps to make sense of the world and helps to understand pain and the agony of suffering.

Has making the film affected your own practice of faith?

It brought me back. Iím deeply interested and exploring, and itís coming out in practice. Iíve been married for 22 years and have four children. The last couple of years, Iíve felt closer to my wife.

Is it difficult to be a person of faith in Hollywood?

I donít know that it is. If youíre walking around talking about it all day, and constantly preaching, it might be. People donít want to hear that, no matter what message youíre selling. Theyíre like ďI donít want soap, and I donít want Christ. Donít sell me anything.Ē

The more I follow the online discussions ... the more I follow the debates and disagreements in the Church about administrative unity, or the concerns expressed about the moral or personal or administrative or leadership failings of the bishops or the clergy, the more I become convinced that whatever might be the truth of these concerns, ALL of this is simply a distraction. No, itís more than that. Itís a justification, an excuse, for not helping each other and those outside the Church fall in love with Jesus Christ. How easy it is to talk about everything, but about Jesus hardly at all.

I was thinking he was probably best known for being in the "Major League" movies. I had forgotten about L.A. Law, which was popular in it's time but for some reason doesn't rerun much these days.

Funny, until I clicked the link and saw his picture, I was thinking he was Dr. Johnny Fever on WKRP in Cincinnati. But that was Howard Hesseman.

What I don't follow about the article and maybe I missed something but is he Catholic? He mentioned that he was Christian Scientist but I couldn't figure out what he is now.

Matthew Chapter 7

7 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened."

One of President Obama's top aides, David Axelrod, declared: ďthe era of cheap gasoline is over.Ē Under President Obama, gas prices have increased about $2.00 per gallon on average.
