According to the author, at least one major element unites their thought - their aversion to a relativistic society.
Vatican expert Paolo Rodari examines the Pope's interest in the soon-to-be beatified English cardinal in an article titled, "The fight against relativism of B-XVI is the same as Newman's one hundred years ago." The Il Foglio writer refers to the argument of Msgr. Roderick Strange, who in his "spiritual biography" of Cardinal Newman, illustrates a moment when then-Cardinal Ratzinger showed a "bond" with the founder of the Birmingham Oratory.
Holding the floor before the College of Cardinals on the eve of the papal enclave in which he was elected in 2005, Cardinal Ratzinger spoke of the "dictatorship of relativism" threatening the world, in which nothing is definite and the only thing that remains is "oneself and one's desires." I think that twentieth century knowledge about how psychological, developmental, and environmental factors influence people have led people to look at each individual sin as a unique occurrence, committed by someone who lives, not in a vacuum, but in an environment where he has been influenced by genetics, upbringing, social environment, etc.
In the game of golf, for example, you have handicaps (as you do in bowling leagues.) That system recognizes that the person with the lower average has to struggle harder to excel, and recognizes that by leveling the playing field.
The designers of golf and bowling leagues understand what innate fairness is...and I am sure that that understanding is God-given, and that it reflects God's innate fairness.
Most relativists are not trying to say there is no absolute right and wrong. They are saying, as Psalm 139 does, that God knows and loves us each uniquely, knows our struggles and challenges, and looks at all our actions in the light of those things. |
