Has God ever given you more than you could handle?

The bible says that God will not give us more that we can bear. The last year has been a hard one for me. I have had really bad bouts with depression and anxiety, and I honestly felt like it was more than I could handle.

Any one else ever felt the same? Comments? I know people have had harder times than I did, but it just really felt like to much to me. It attacked an area where I am no doubt the weakest.

Hey MrStace,
I think God can really push you to the limit sometimes. I know that verse can make it seem like "oh good, not more than I can handle" but gee, you dont realize just how much you CAN handle till God starts piling it on. I suppose the verse is true, but God can really cut it to the wire sometimes.

Exactly.

God will never burden you with too much. He promises that. One thing you can do is "Let go and let God" ( yes that's a cheesy over used line, but it's true).

Maybe you're trying to take on too much and not letting God handle it. Let him bear the buden(s) on his shoulders so you don't have to.

Also one truely doesn't know what they're capable of until their limits are tested.

Depression doesn't help things out. If you're out of emotional energy, then even small problems are overwhelming. Thus really big problems are utterly deflating and incapacitating. Adversity is the forge which hammers us into what we're supposed to be. It's pretty crummy sometimes. Being stuck in a bed of hot coals and then pounded with a hammer is overrated. But all we can do is trust that the guy with the hammer knows what he's doing. It seems to work out that way.

I fel your pain with depression though. It can make getting through the day an agony.

This is true Galadriel. Everytime I mention this to my friends they say "Well you did bear it", and I say "just barely". "Cut it to the wire" is a good way to put it!!

I don't want this to sound like a school lesson, but it's going to sound like that you can see from my point of view.

God promises us not to give us more TEMPTATIONS then we can bear. Not trials.

1 Corinathians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

Trials and temptations are not the same things. Temptations are something that entices you to do wrong. Trials are periods where your faith is being tested. That doesn't bring about sin. Trials can include temptations, but are not in themselves temptations. Also in the above verse it says that no temptations have seized us except what is common to man. Every one has the same temptations in some form. But not everyone has the same trials.

I believe that God does give us more then we care bear. If we can bear it ourselves, then what's the point of us depending on God?

2 Corinthians 1:8-9
For we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. - (NKJV)

We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. (NIV)

Paul and Timothy were under trials that they couldn't bear. They had no strength left and they didn't even want to live!

But here's the awesome part. God delievered them. God gives us His strength. The next verse in that passage says "Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead, who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver us; in whom we trust that He will still deliver us..." (2 Cor. 1:9-10).

God will give us strength. He's promised us that. Jesus said for those who are weary to come to Him and He'll give us rest (Matt. 11:28). We all do all things in Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13).

God's never going to leave us. And even when we go through things we can't bear, He's here. He is going to give us the strength to go through it. He wants our total dependence on Him. Sometimes it takes these things to get that.

One last passage of Paul. He was going through something horrible. He couldn't stand it. But he knew that it was so he would depend on God's strength and not his own.

2 Corinthians 12:7-10
And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness." Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Your adornment must not be merely external--braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. 1 Peter 3:3-4

OH boy, if I was to write everything attack that happeend to me this past year it would take you a day to read it.

Yes there are times when I am feeling like I am wondering in the desert alone. But after I come through the storm I can see where he was with me all the time.

I too suffer from depression and anxiety. This year it came to a head and I sought help for it. With the help of Jesus and medication I am doing much better. But having the condition does not help matters when your feeling over-loaded. This past year I almost ended up in a psyc ward because it got so bad.

I now know that when it hits that is just all the more reaon to get my eyes on him and off the circumstance. Get your head up out of the chaos in your life long enough to hear God's voice.

The best way to defeat the enemy is on your knees.I look at it as battle training. And afterward I feels so much stronger, ready for anything.

Hang in there, stay focused, God sure must trust you alot!

John R. Rice once wrote, "I once imagined I was in Heaven, walking along with the Angel Gabriel. I said, "Gabe, what is that big building over there?"

"You'll be disappointed," he answered. "I don't think you want to see it." But I insisted, and he proceeded to show me floor after floor of beautiful gifts, all wrapped and ready to be sent.

"Gabriel, what are all of these?"

He said, I thought rather sadly, "We wrapped all these things, but people never called for them."

There are gifts and an abundance of blessings to be received from heaven -- but we need to claim them as our own! We receive not because we've asked not.

When we ask the Lord in humility and expectation for His goodness, He will answer! Then we'll be better equipped to do the great things He has in store for us.

Teen4Jesus will become famous soon enough
Sometimes I feel like God is trying to test me. Like lately I've been dealing with my own problems with SI and an ED and now my friend is really getting emotionally abused and sometimes instead of talking to her I just want to tell her that I can't take it right now, the pain is getting too much for me. I know god will always be there for me no matter what though.

~God Bless~

You are right, thanks. However, it does say that he will never leave us or forsake us, it just that when we are at our lowest lowes, I have often found myself feeling forsaken.

I totally agree with you mrstace. That's why I think even more that God let's us go through things we can't bear. Because He's always there.
