Questions about healing, casting out demons, prophesying, speaking in tongues..

How come these things don't happen anymore. Why is it some churches believe in this and others don't? Why did Jesus tell his followers that they would do greater things than He did, and in modern times, it doesn't happen like that? Or maybe Jesus was referring to something else. Why are we promised that with the proper faith we can perform miracles in the name of Christ and yet when we try it fails?
Are demons real? Can they be cast out? Is speaking in tongues really supposed to not be "prohibited" in the church?
I could go on for a long time, but you see where I'm going.
Thanks in advance for any replies.

I will offer my view. If you want to discuss these topics at length, you can post in one of the CF theology forums. The Ask A Chaplain forum is not set up for extensive discussion of theological topics.

I believe that there were two kinds of gifts given the early church: miraculous gifts of divine revelation and healing, given temporarily in the apostolic era for the purpose of confirming the authenticity of the apostles’ message (Hebrews 2:3-4; 2 Corinthians 12:12); and ministering gifts, given to equip believers for edifying one another.

With the New Testament revelation now complete, Scripture becomes the sole test of the authenticity of a man’s message, and confirming gifts of a miraculous nature are no longer necessary to validate a man or his message (1 Corinthians 13:8-12). In fact, miraculous gifts can even be counterfeited by Satan so as to deceive even believers (1 Corinthians 13:13-14:12; Revelation 13:13-14). The only gifts in operation today are those non-revelatory equipping gifts given for edification (Romans 12:6-8).

For example, I believe no one possesses the miraculous gift of healing today, but that God does hear and answer the prayer of faith and will answer in accordance with His own perfect will for the sick, suffering, and afflicted (Luke 18:1-6; John 5:7-9; 2 Corinthians 12:6-10; James 5:13-16; 1 John 5:14-15).

The theological term for my view is: cessationism.

Thanks for your information. I will go back to the Scriptures and prayerfully go over the verses you've cited. The reason I asked is because of a debate regarding the verse that says that speaking in tongues shouldn't be prohibited in church. I felt worried because I attend a church where no one ever speaks in tongues, and I don't know if it's "prohibited" but I'm sure it wouldn't go over well at all if someone wanted to speak in tongues even if they had an interpreter.
From this question, many others sprung up and I feel oppressed. I don't want to debate these things, I'm just looking for God to show me the way I should believe. I don't want to be on the wrong side of truth, but how to know truth? Especially about these "finer" points in the Bible. And I feel inadequate when talking with other people who have a clear stance on all these different things. Like I don't have as much faith as they, or something.

Again, thanks for your input, and if you want to end the conversation, that is fine with me. God bless you.
