I've had great luck using time release melatonin. I take 2mgs about an hour before bed, and typically sleep well - at least better than I used to. And haven't developed an addiction to them.
As an extra bonus, recall reading that melatonin might help with lowering blood pressure.
"Melatonin for high blood pressure?"
Melatonin is fascinating stuff.
In addition to its use as a sleep aid, melatonin exerts possible effects on cardiovascular parameters, including anti-oxidative action on LDL, reduction in sympathetic (adrenaline-driven) tone, and reduction in blood pressure.
Several studies document the blood pressure-reducing effect of melatonin:
Daily nighttime melatonin reduces blood pressure in male patients with essential hypertension.
Melatonin reduces night blood pressure in patients with nocturnal hypertension.
Prolonged melatonin administration decreases nocturnal blood pressure in women.
Blood pressure-lowering effect of melatonin in type 1 diabetes.
But blood pressure may be increased when melatonin is added to nifedipine, a calcium channel blocker:
Its a nice thread on night sleep. I like the suggestion of the members on it. Thanks for sharing it with me. Keep sharing.

Wait isnt GABA a hormone responsible for relaxation. Meaning if we have inadequate or decreased GABA levels in our body it would lead to anxiety. Correct me if im wrong
GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter that has no real scientific proof to support the claims that it induces relaxtion etc when taken in drug form as it does not the cross the blood-brain barrier in significant quantitities to have an effect

If I get off of Ambien CR(which isn't working more than 6 hrs), can I take benadryl or advil pm instead?
I don't get out much any more and found sleep near impossible. The doctor prescribed Lunesta which worked great, they say it is non-addictive, but don't believe that, they are very psychological addictive. It took some strong-willed determination to quit using them. These days I seldom have a sleepless night.
To get a good nights sleep prepare yourself before hand. No heavy meals, No drinks containing caffeine or sugar. No TV viewing of violent, or even emotional shows, spend time with God. 10 minutes of full attention conversation with Him will do wonders. I also use my music, some of the older gospel music played low and soft. The songs of David Ingles has long met my needs. David Ingles Ministries (diministries.org)
foxta i like your neurotransmitter comment glutamic acid/glycine glutamine are all inhibitory neurotransmitter precursors. 100mg or so of B3 seems to be pretty relaxing
