WASHINGTON - The military's top uniformed officer declared Tuesday that gays should be allowed to serve openly in uniform, arguing that it is "the right thing to do."
It was the strongest statement yet from the Pentagon on this volatile issue.
Adm. Mike Mullem told the Senate Armed Services Committee he is deeply troubled by a policy that forces people to "lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens."
Only Congress can change the law. They won't tackle anything this controversial in an election year, but it's a good first step. The policy is silly and needs to go. The military's prime concern should be how their personnel behave on duty and perform their jobs. Not the sex of whom they're attracted to.
Open Homosexuals within the ranks of the military is not conducive to high standard of work, esprit de corps, etc.
As an American Infantryman serving on Active Duty, I am whole heartedly against removing the "don't ask don't tell" policy.
Are homosexuals going to be given different quarters and latrines? They should, we don't allow women and men to shower together, neither should they force straight men to shower with sodomites. I need to know that my buddies are watching my back, not watching my backside. Many people will not re-enlist if they remove this policy, or so I feel from a general concensus.

Gay dudes have high standards from what I hear. And their sex drives vary from person to person, do you really think some undisciplined queen is going to make it's way into the military to "attack" everything it sees? They're going to be soldiers after all.

Why exactly does it bother you all that much? Do you really think all gay men are just looking to score you? Are you looking to score every single woman you come across?

That was also said about blacks. The first black units during the war were marshaled only for the demoralizing effect on the Southern troops. They were not expected to do well. That is why they were put in separate units. And yet the "buffalo soldier" was the backbone of the postwar Western expansion, and they were the Americans that the Indians feared and respected the most.

Good. It only fosters secret witch hunts and star-chamber-like kangaroo courts.

Again much the same (though usually without the sexual innuendo) was said when Truman first integrated the races in the armed forces.

Homosexuals are JUST as capable of upholding "high standards" as anyone else.

That's a shame. May I ask why?

That's ridiculous. Gay men are not out to get you, sleep with you, or anything else. They'd be there to do their job, just the same as you. Why would you be worried about having to shower with other men, gay or not, unless perhaps you aren't secure in your own sexuality?

Actually he probably is, or at least he wants his lockerroom buddies to think so. It's a macho thing.

My stance is the same as it is in the "1000 Rabis" thread. If a nation wants homosexuals to contribute and pay taxes, demanding they not defend said nation is hypocrisy and a complete infringement on civil liberties.
