Bl. John Pibush died on this day in 1601. He was a missionary priest in England during a time of great persecution. Entering the priesthood was considered an act of treason. John was imprisoned and killed for his faith.

Today the Church recalls St. Alvarez of Cordova. He was a very holy man who built a monastery in the mountains of Cordova Spain. After he died in 1430 repeated attempts to move his relics to the city were halted by violent storms at each attempt.

Today the Church recalls St. Winnoc, monk. He was born into nobility but offered manual labor as penance. St. Winnoc often took on the worst tasks at the monastery for himself, continuing until his death in the early 700's A.D.

Today is the Memorial of St. Polycarp, bishop and martyr. As a child Polycarp was brought to the faith by St. John the Evangelist. Some 86 years later he was martyred by Roman officials for refusing to deny his faith.
