He served as a missionary to Hawaii, volunteering for service in the leper colony. After 15 years he contracted the disease himself, dying in 1889.

Francis was a very effective Jesuit preacher who took the word of God to where the sinners were such as the prisons, galleys and brothels. Many were converted because of him.

We celebrated Christ’s resurrection 40 days ago, and now celebrate His return to heaven. The Paschal Candle, lit during Mass since Easter, is extinguished after the Gospel today.
