RC archbishop to Anglicans: we don’t want cafeteria Catholics
Those disaffected Anglicans in England and Wales who think they can take up Pope Benedict’s offer and switch to Rome with a “pick and choose” attitude should think again, the Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, Vincent Nichols has said.
Many Anglicans unhappy with women’s ordination and gay clergy cannot just convert to Roman Catholicism as a way out, but must accept Catholic doctrine wholeheartedly, he said.
“Nothing is envisaged in this provision that the Pope has put in place is a kind of minimalist approach to picking bits of the Catholic faith that I like and then seeing myself as it were contained as a quasi-Catholic, not a real Catholic, under the umbrella of this constitution,” he said, referring to a “buffet approach” to the faith that some Catholics dismiss as “cafeteria Catholicism.”

From what does such contrariness arise in habitually angry people, but from a secret cause of too high an opinion of themselves so that it pierces their heart when they see any man esteem them less than they esteem themselves? An inflated estimation of ourselves is more than half the weight of our wrath.
I guess somebody had to say it. I think the Church well knows we have enough cafeteria Catholics as is to contend with.
I know as a convert myself they really try to get across what you are getting into & that you understand & believe what the Catholic Church teaches & are ready to follow it.

And here I thought that the term "cafeteria Catholic" was considered to be flaming,
and yet the Cardinal of Westminster uses it.

I'm really glad he said that, because I don't think we would want these priests, however many or few there are, to treat their conversion like a revolving door.
I wonder what will happen to their congregations. I can't imagine that they would just follow their pastor unless they really felt the desire to change on their own. I know that I wouldn't change to a different denomination just because my pastor did, I'd need to feel the need to change completely on my own, and I would want it to be a family decision.
