Unless you are in His mercy - and being purged.
Otherwise - you are judged immediately after death.
Judgement also includes - cleaning up the residual dirt from sin.
See parable of the Master - debtor - jail til the last farthing is paid.

Matthew Chapter 7
7 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened."
Those dead we are praying for are already assured of their eventual entrance into Heaven, thus they had "chosen Christ" before their death.
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church:
III. THE FINAL PURIFICATION, OR PURGATORY 1030 All who die in God's grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. 1031 The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect, which is entirely different from the punishment of the damned.606 The Church formulated her doctrine of faith on Purgatory especially at the Councils of Florence and Trent. The tradition of the Church, by reference to certain texts of Scripture, speaks of a cleansing fire:607
As for certain lesser faults, we must believe that, before the Final Judgment, there is a purifying fire. He who is truth says that whoever utters blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will be pardoned neither in this age nor in the age to come. From this sentence we understand that certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come.608
1032 This teaching is also based on the practice of prayer for the dead, already mentioned in Sacred Scripture: "Therefore [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin."609 From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.610 The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead:
Let us help and commemorate them. If Job's sons were purified by their father's sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them.611

I got this from the Ft Hood shooting thread......How would you know which soldiers chose Christ....I see could see if your pray "have mercy" but He does for those who chose him and those who deny Him, their fate is sealed..I can understand praying for the living that God would use the loss to draw them to Him..peace to you .... Nab
I guess I'm trying to understand praying for those whose fate is sealed....

Given that we don't know who we'll see in Heaven, we often pray for those who have died in general.

We dont read hearts - we dont know anyone's judgement.
But if they are in purgatory - we pray for them. If they went to Heaven or otherwise - the prayers will be used for others in purgatory in need.
No prayer goes wasted.
And no one but God knows someone's heart.
1 Corinthians 4 3But to me it is a very small thing to be judged by you, or by man's day; but neither do I judge my own self. 4 For I am not conscious to myself of any thing, yet am I not hereby justified; but he that judgeth me, is the Lord.5 Therefore judge not before the time; until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall every man have praise from God.

Becasue only God knows how eventually gets to Heaven, He is the only judge, not us. So we pray for the mercy of all.
