If we were to take stock of what we could call false teachers, we would be deceived into thinking that their last step was what got them into trouble.
A couple of examples would, as in the case of Jim Jones, Joseph Smith and others, show us that errors in doctrine, judgment and focus are the result of many early steps that would eventually take them from small scale to large scale false doctrine.
We as lay people have the benefit of our collective experience in order to order our steps ands avoid the heartbreak of long-term deception.
Even when we are led astray, there are many within reach to help us on our way, and many of us that are equipped to help others.
