Is. 44:15 Then shall it be for a man to burn: for he will take thereof, and warm himself; yea, he kindleth it, and baketh bread; yea, he maketh a god, and worshippeth it; he maketh it a graven image, and falleth down thereto.
Is. 44:16 He burneth part thereof in the fire; with part thereof he eateth flesh; he roasteth roast, and is satisfied: yea, he warmeth himself, and saith, Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire:
Is. 44:17 And the residue thereof he maketh a god, even his graven image: he falleth down unto it, and worshippeth it, and prayeth unto it, and saith, Deliver me; for thou art my god.
Is. 44:18 They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand.
Is. 44:19 And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?
Is. 44:20 He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?
When I read these verses it tells me of a god of man’s creation, God in the likeness of men. Here is a man who planted a tree, it was watered and nourished by the rains until it grew strong… Then the man takes it to burn it and to cook his dinner, so he takes part and lights a fire, he uses part to cook his food and after he is warm and well fed he takes part and fashions it into a god, a god that looks like himself…
He bows down and prays to this god of his own creation… his prayer... deliver me for you are my god… how foolish, why did the tree not deliver itself from being cut down or from the fire? But yet he thinks it will deliver him…
Now we would never do that, cut down a tree and bow down to it and worship it… but sometimes we have a god of our own creation, the god of our own imagination, created to be just like us and sometimes when we cry out to this god for deliverance there is no answer because he is no god at all and cannot deliver us…
As we follow after God let us be sure we are following the God of the bible, that we are not following a god of our own invention but that we are following the true and living God, a God who is mighty to deliver, the God who created not only the trees and the man but all of creation… A God who has revealed himself to man and desires a relationship with us…
He alone is God, let us seek after Him and begin to worship Him in Spirit and in Truth…
