Definition of Abortion

Abortion: In medicine, an abortion is the premature exit of the products of conception (the fetus, fetal membranes, and placenta) from the uterus. It is the loss of a pregnancy and does not refer to why that pregnancy was lost.
A spontaneous abortion is the same as a miscarriage. The miscarriage of 3 or more consecutive pregnancies is termed habitual abortion.

The Pro-Life dems have stood firm and forced a vote on the amendment.

"We become enthusiastic advocates for moving forward with health care reform," he said, if that happens.

Good job Catholic Bishops and Pro-life Democrats! I'm not a big fan of this health care bill because it doesn't go far enough to insure a vigorous public option but it seems this might be the best we can get out of the people currently in office. I can't support it when it has funding for abortion though.

Well, the House of Representatives think it will pass in either case, because they think that no matter which way the voting on the amendment goes, there will be enough representatives committed enough to health care who will vote for a bill they deem imperfect.

In the end, the leadership decided to give him a floor vote on his amendment. They hope that whether or not the amendment passes, the Democratic caucus will come together in the end to vote in favor of the bill on final passage. In other words, if the amendment fails, the fact that the leadership allowed it to happen might be enough to win votes from some of the 40 pro-life Democrats. And if it is adopted, pro-choice Democrats who oppose the amendment will likely still vote for the bill so as to not stand in the way of health care reform. (For a more detailed report on how the Rules Committee came to allow a vote on Stupak’s amendment, see Ryan Grim’s reporting.)
Senior Democrats believe the deal to allow a vote on the abortion amendment secure the votes needed to pass the health care bill. “You don’t go to the floor unless you’re there — and we’re there,” Rep. John Larson [D, CT-1] told the L.A. Times.

So hey.

Some political analysts say if the Stupak amendment passes it will make it more likely that health care as a whole will get passed, because, when the House and Senate bills are reconciled and voted on by both houses, the Republicans will have one less thing they can complain about, thereby weakening their overall arguments.

What a wonderful amendment, that might actually help the pre-born AND the already born at the same time. In a political environment where a vote for life almost always means a kick in the butt to the already living, this is welcome news indeed. It gives me hope that once in a great while, in limited circumstances, there might be other occasions where people can vote for life without giving a kick in the butt to the already living.

This really is the best news I've heard in days.

We as Catholics have a responsibility to protect the unborn and make sure that those in our midst are cared for (heal the sick...)

This bill, if it passes, gioves us a moral way to do both. Here's a big "Well done!" to the Pro-Life Democrats! I confess that I have, at times, been cynical towards them in the past. Here they are, taking a stand, probably an unpopular stand in thbeir party, one which may well come back to haunt the professionally. Republicans are expected to pay lip service to being anti-abortion, when a Democrat does it, they do it at risk to themselves. Here's to the brave pro-life soldiers, Domocrats for Life!

Here is the thing - these democrats will never be allowed to run for president.
The DNC wont allow pro life democrats to run for that office. Dont ask me why.

Actually, its the DLC that's the problem.

The DNC fought to have the pro-life democrat plank included in the Democratic Platform.

The DLC sort of sucks.

So what?

Get in line and thank them for sacrificing their careers so that children may live. You seem awful quick to call out those on the left who are pro-abortion, but I've yet to see you sing the praises of those on the left that aren't. Part of me is starting to suspect that politics are more important to you than the lives of innocents.

They aren't necessarily sacrificing their careers, just as "liberal" Republicans aren't.

In places like NY, for example, most Republicans are far more moderate than the national party, and a fair number are pro-choice. NYC Mayor Bloomberg had been a Democrat all his life, but decided to become a Republican (without changing any of his positions) to avoid pesky primary battles on the Democratic side.

And in the South, most Democrats are far more conservative than the national party as a whole.

Neither Republicans nor Democrats necessarily line up alike on the issues.

My understanding is that it would prohibit any federal subsidy from paying for a plan that covers abortion, with exceptions. People who are not subsidized would still be able to buy a plan that covers abortion, and people who are subsidized would be able to buy supplementary insurance to cover abortions. This would only affect those who purchase insurance through the exchanges. Nothing would change at first for those who get insurance through their employers until they are allowed to participate in the exchanges later on.

I can see why insurance companies would support the ammendment, and it would have nothing to do with morality, but
money.

Jim
I doubt insurers support it. They wouldn't cover abortion unless they believed that the marginal increase in their revenues was greater than the marginal increase in cost.
