Why does God allow certain things to happen?

Jeremiah 29:11 states that we have a hope and a future, despite the bad circumstances we're facing. Well in my situation an irreversible thing has happened and has drastically shaken my confidence as a person. Something that has affected the way I look, although it's a natural thing... ok I'll spill it, I'm losing my hair. Now I'm in my mid 20's and I know it is not highly uncommon for this to happen, but I've waited my whole life for the women God has planned for me(I literally never even dated someone b/c I was confident that the Lord would let it happen when it was ment to be). And now I feel like I'll never have the confidence I once had to break the ice with her when our paths finally do cross. I have become quite self concious and I pray about this all the time and am constantly looking up scripture to cope.

Why? Why? Why? I have to literally fake my confidence now and even force myself to look into people's eyes b/c I feel like they are stairing at my head. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't understand why God would allow this to happen to me when He knows how greatly it breaks my heart. I'm not shallow or vain by any means, I mean come on, who wants to lose their hair?? People tell me that God does things like this draw us closer to Him so we fully rely on Him for His promises.... well I do trust Him and still think I will meet her when God's timing comes into focus, but I just can't grasp the whole idea of my shattered confidence. I can't imagine a girl my age not somewhat feeling turned off by me losing my hair at our early age. I know this can seem like a shallow concept but it's reality and it hurts. Please someone give me a Biblical reason for all of this. Why has God allowed something that hurts so much. I have served Him with pure motives and Love Jesus so much and would never never let this effect our relationship, I just need encouragement and a somewhat clear answer.

I will offer some encouragement and hope but first let me ask you three questions to consider. They are
1. Can you change your hair loss?
2. Can you change how others view your hair loss?
3. Can you change yourself and your attitude?

Sorry there is no clear answer. When we read through the bible and we see bad things happen sometimes it is a result of what a person (or nation) have done and they are being punished. Or sometimes it is like Job who was simply part of God proving to Satan that there was an upright man and that it had nothing to do with his wealth or good fortune. Remember what God said to Job? Who are you to question me? Where you there when the earth was created? So sometimes we just aren't meant to question. Other times it is simply the result of us living in a fallen world that is decaying. One of the consequences of sin is death and decay. Sometimes we are just meant to have a thorn in our side like apostle Paul.

NOW for the hope and encouragement.
I also believed that if God wanted me to have a wife then he would make it happen. He did. I am married and you know what my wife found so attractive about me? It was the fact that i was committed to growth as a person. Whenever someone was critical of me I would ask close friends if it was justified or not ( as well as thinking about it myself). Despite those close friends not knowing each other they always gave the same answer. So sometimes I had to change myself to be the best man of God I can be. I didn't always agree with my close friends but I always followed their response. My wife found that so attractive. I personally am overweight and thought that would be a problem but that is not what my wife sees.
I reckon that the girl God has for you will not care about how much hair you have but rather are you a man who loves God with all his heart and wants to serve God anyway possible. God knows your strengths and weaknesses. He will provide someone who can help you overcome those weaknesses or will be strong in those areas.

Those three questions at the top of my post. There is only one that you can answer yes to.

No, the hair is not the problem. Look at Bruce Willis. Does he appear not confident? He is bald.

Your problem is the lack of confidence. Jesus is confident. You need to live in confidence.

As for "why do bad things happen to me", bald is not that bad. As a teenager I had horrendous acne, worse then anyone I had ever seen, or have seen. Imagine the torment of seeing guys that are adults with horrible pits in their face. But, it all went away and I finally became very handsome. People can't even tell.

I also had problems because I was so skinny and while I had good looks, I had a baby face, a kind face.

Later, I realized that reflected my nature and was a good thing.

I also worked out and totally changed my body. Now, I am skinny but muscular, I still have some heft though I haven't worked out in years.

Jesus slept in a boat during a storm during the daytime. He walked through a crowd that tried to throw him off a cliff. Despite the many times he infuriated the crowd, he still said, "you have to eat my flesh and blood" -- and everyone but the twelve went away. Including the seventy.

There's a huge difference between being meek and being weak. You are listening to lying spirits that come and tempt you to destroy your confidence. All of the prophets and apostles had confidence. You should be working out anyway, as I suggested months ago to build up your self-esteem with your body.

You also need to relax... I do not know what all else you are doing. You don't seem to be looking to Jesus as recorded by the Apostles as your role model, though.

Probably, you are too caught up in religious concepts imparted by man. Remember, the Pharisees were the primary ones responsible for murdering Jesus. True religion is about not being a hypocrite. Nothing is condemned in love.

You are called to be brave, take the hits as they come, not try and second guess God, and not shrink back from faith. Right now the only thing you are being tested on is merely dealing with college age children. That is trivial.

I was always standoffish as a kid, and still am. I could care less what people think about me. You can never please them anyway. Definitely, don't worry about the praise of man - or woman - but do try and get along with people. (To win them, but not always, sometimes they need to be shook up. Never compromise to win them.)

Maybe you need to get into sales or the military to improve your self-esteem.

You need some shock to your system.

Shave your head. That might be a look.

A lot of bald guys do that, no one can hardly tell.

Kennedy had a great saying -- 'do not pray that bad things do not happen to you, pray for the strength to handle them'.

And consider the Chinese parable about the kid who broke his leg.

Near China's northern borders lived a man well versed in the practices of Taoism. His horse, for no reason at all, got into the territory of the northern tribes. Everyone commiserated with him.
"Perhaps this will soon turn out to be a blessing," said his father.
After a few months, his animal came back, leading a fine horse from the north. Everyone congratulated him.
"Perhaps this will soon turn out to be a cause of misfortune," said his father.
Since he was well-off and kept good horses his son became fond of riding and eventually broke his thigh bone falling from a horse. Everyone commiserated with him.
"Perhaps this will soon turn out to be a blessing," said his father.
One year later, the northern tribes started a big invasion of the border regions. All able-bodied young men took up arms and fought against the invaders, and as a result, around the border nine out of ten men died. This man's son did not join in the fighting because he was crippled and so both the boy and his father survived.
(And, no, I am not a Taoist, it is a bunch of junk, but it is a good saying. )

The Dag, thank you. I believe over the years the enemy has been filling my head with lies and the more I get past it the more I see the potential God gave me. I think we agree on many points and I've even thought about the thorn thing, that God let this happen so I would keep coming to Him. I know that eventually I'll get over this, but for now I keep leaning on Jesus to overcome the sorrow I feel.

Freeport, thanks as well. You always seem to give long replies, which I'm grateful for. I know you don't know me personally and would seemingly wonder about weather I really trust in God, and let me tell you, I do with the faith that was given to me. As for my confidence, I can guarentee you that if you were to ask someone who knew me (co-worker, friend) they'd tell you I was a confident person, despite my condition. The thing is.... I fake it. I know I should be confident in the person I am in Christ. And I know how God views me (my heart) but regardless, I am human and struggle with my self image to a point. I pray all the time for confidence with the right mixture of humility so I wouldn't get full of myself but rather be motivated to get out there and serve God. Anyways, thank you and God bless...

Lastly, holywisdom, thank you for your.... holy wisdom (couldn't resist lol) you're are very right about becoming a slave to other's views on us and that is another thing I pray that God will break me from. Paul says not to be a slave to anything and that we're free in Christ, but like most things, unless God completely destroys the chains, that's a process too. I'll keep praying for the release of the bondage, thank you.

What truly matters is where your soul is going to end up. I suppose you could view hair loss as evidence of where your heart is really at. So when you think about it just remember that it may be falling out as nothing more than a reminder to put your mind in the right place.

Not to crush your hopes of marriage, but do remember that Paul spoke of how much more blessed it is to be free to serve the Lord entirely.

No, I think you are a fine Christian... that is why I bother to spend time with you. I am a bit hard on this kind of thing to get you to fight back and stand up for yourself. That is all.

Fake the confidence, keep faking, suddenly you might find yourself forgetting you are "faking" and making it real. Bravery doesn't mean not having fear... it means facing down your fears.

I am human, too, and can relate with your story a lot. I also struggle with self-image, like I was saying. I am glad in retrospect I had the challenges I did, because it made me a stronger person.

Shyness has a place, too. It is good to listen, then speak, very often. If we just jump into conversations and such, it might not be wise. But, look out for fear based thoughts. Throw them away.

I am definitely shy. I hate crowds. Speaking in public is the most horrible thing. But, you learn to face it.

You might want to try getting into acting or toastmaster's or sales to get yourself challenged and more confident before people. That stuff really helps. Or do open night poetry mics.

One of our modern idolatries is body image. Hair loss is common and for some starts early. Are you defined by your hairline or by who you know you are?

Shaved heads are a fashion statement for some men. I think you need to re-evaluate some of your core values.
