Going by the standards of the first gulf war, this is about right. The USAF managed to account for 19% of the British fatalities. It was not entirely patriotism that the British tanks and IFVs started flying enormous Union Flags from their radio antennae.
Going back to the OP, ridiculously expensive high-tech weapons like the F22 are completely unneccesary in an anti-insurgency role, when a non-stealth fighter-bomber would be just as effective. And what's the point of buying more C17 transport aircraft when you already have more than you need now or in the future?
I'm all in favour of spending what is necessary for defence, but there ought to be practical limits.

Case in point... suppose we decided to take Reagan's "Star Wars" missle defense system out of the trashcan and build it... We spend close to a trillion dollars building lasers that can be bounced off satillites to shoot down ICBMs...
