Again, just for the sake of curiosity, I think it would be nice to collect some of the varying opinions about what modesty means, since people draw the line in so many different places on this issue.
Please feel free to share your thoughts -- without debate, if possible.
I may give my personal viewpoint at a later time.

Well, here I am, and my personal convictions are as follows (and I fully realize that some will see things differently):
I am one of those people who would be viewed as "dowdy" by some, but "immodest" in ultra-strict circles, yet I feel the way I dress is very reasonable. My clothing consists of tops, pants, skirts, and dresses, all chosen with as much care as possible so as to not be extremely revealing. I try to wear tops that don't reveal cleavage, I prefer jeans/slacks that normal to looser-fit (neither overly baggy nor tight), and skirts that are below the knee. In warmer weather, I prefer capris and/or shorts that hit the knees. Swimsuits are completely out the question for me.
Anyway, that's basically it.

Post pics and we can vote whether it's modest or not
I can try. If I can't post a picture, I may find some links. If I do, it will be a completely random thing; a mixture of extremely modest, not-so-modest, and that stuff in between.

The clothing that is pictured is thought to be immodest by this particular church. I can see where the short skirt and dress they show might be considered questionable. But when it comes to the black slacks, I honestly don't see anything "immodest" about them. And looking at some of the tops: They are clearly low-cut. But pair them with something in the line of a mock "dickie" collar, and it would cover a "multitude of sin"!

They'd consider that cross-dressing, most likely. But it wouldn't surprise me that these folks don't differentiate between men's pants and women's pants.

That is the first time I have ever heard a woman's chest referred to as "a multitude of sin."

I would have no problem with any of those, except that I'd say the skirt is definitely too short to wear to church, though it'd be fine for a nightclub.
My basic standard is "socially appropriate": if Miss Manners would approve, so would I.
I personally tend to dress a lot like Joan Jett.

What I can't figure out is why they'd be so bent on thinking that a lady who wears pants (feminine pants, mind you) is "cross-dressing", but don't think anything about tennis shoes/sneakers, boots, sweaters, sweatshirts, T-shirts, and many other "generic" clothing items. I mean, weren't these all worn by men first? Yet, as with pants/jeans, these things were made in ladies' styles, too.
I can about imagine what they'd think of me and my overalls!
