We confess our sins directly to the Lord and sometimes to other people too. It's a good thing to confess your sins to other people even though other people can't forgive your sins. They can, however, provide advice as to how to avoid the sin in the future. Only God can forgive your sins.
(1 Timothy 2:5 NIV) For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
(1 John 1:9 NIV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
(Luke 5:21 NIV) The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, "Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
A note on the verse in Luke. We know that the Pharisees and teachers of the law spoke a truth that God alone can forgive sins because we also know that Jesus is God even though the Pharisees did not believe so.
If we alter the altar is it still an altar? (I agree with Ron.)

Enjoy your imagined "superiority". Sorry we common folk don't meet your elevated criteria, such that you feel the need to look down your nose on us. Apparently in-depth study of scripture and the like are a waste of time, in your estimation. If this is such a waste of time, what are you doing here?

I am attempting to learn more about the Baptist faith because my wife is of the Baptist faith, unfortunately being in Iraq, I can't ask her every question I think of. So I am curious as to Baptists have confession and if not, how is this justified. The reason I ask is because I was raised Catholic and baptized Orthodox 3 years ago, so the possibility of not confessing to a priest seems foriegn to me. I intend no offense and apologize if I did offend anyone with my ignorance.
Thank you in advance.
First, stay safe in Iraq!
I was raised Catholic as well. The catholic church never felt like a home for me but I understand that many brothers and sisters enjoy the structure there. I now belong to a baptist church but I don't necessarily identify as baptist. I am a Christian, not a baptist, methodist, catholic, etc. I am saved by the blood of Christ. Christ died for me on a cross, and rose again three days later to prove His deity and power over sin. THAT is what unites us no matter what church I end up in. So long as I am in fellowship with other believers who hold to the faith, I can worship with them.
I have issues with the structure of the catholic church. You do not need a priest for confession, for belief, nor do you need the catholic church for salvation. Church is a gathering of believers for worship and learning about our Lord, and how we can be more like Him. The desire for men to control each other through systems and rules that are outside the bible can happen to any church. It seems to be institutionalized in Catholicism. It happens in baptist churches as well. I'm sure there are many examples of it not being so. But, I will not pray to any man. (mary, saints, etc.) I pray to God.
Realistically our experiences shouldn't be any different no matter what church we go in to. But.. we've split and divided ourselves over so many things we can't have an accord. (Just look at this thread.. ) The only thing I can say is, visit the church when you return home safe. See if you feel comfortable worshiping the Lord there. I commend you for wanting to be in harmony with your wife and I hope you find what you're looking for in church when you return.
May God bless you and keep you safe.
p.s. Sorry for rambling on!
