True, isn't there a verse about the time when the Lord will stand up... doesn't scripture say that when all abandon Israel to their fate, that God shows what happens to those who touch the apple of His eye?

Theodor Hertzl, hungarian founding father of Zionism, pretty cool headed and realistic guy,saw the theory as one of clear political goals. Theological aspect of it, from all I studied, is not as prominent, essentually it's brought up only as a justification for the idea of creating the State.
Most Zionists, like Golda Meier, come ot think of it, who were most inspired by the idea, understood very well that nobody will hand you the land just because your theology says you are entitled.
The creation and existence of the State to this day is a result of tricky political maneuvering, siding with those who support Israel, and playing a lot of politics. There are Zionists- supporters of the State- that arent even Jews, or religious at all
Bentzion Netaniahu - historian and father of the current PM wrote a book back in the fifties, mostly quotes from fathers of Zionism. Interesting how the support of atheistic government of Soviet Union played a big role in UN( frm League of Nations) vote on Israel issue.

Zechariah 2:8
For this is what the LORD Almighty says: "After he has honored me and has sent me [Yahshua] against the nations that have plundered you—for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye- [ the little man in my eye] = [or, the image of me.] Question: How is it that Zion is South of Jerusalem in The Land of the Rock? Yahshua is in the storms of the South.

Not all branches of Judaism suport it, and not all Zionism in its entirety.
Most branches, from Orthodox to Progressive and all in between united in embracing the Zionist idea of the Land belonging to the Jews and State of Israel.
However, because Zionism is less religion based and more of a political movement, Zionism, esp. modern, is leftist and liberal in its core. Many religious jews are against it's ideas of homosexual freedom, sex education in schools, lots of feministic ideas, etc...
Here is the intristic conflict between Zionism and Judaism, especially orthodox. Sorry, but many orthos in a way are saying we want the Land but we refuse to be more open to the world, and want to maintain exclusivity and high degree of separation. Would have God given the Land to the Jews if not for Zionist movement? Was it a case of talking "Hagar route" before waiting on God to do the job ? Was it wrong? Dont know. What do you think?
BOttom line, to get and maintain Land in our possession there are a lot of things need to be done that Judaism doesnt endorse.
Catch 22 in a way..
But I see your point, Vis

I agree with the stand against a lot of the ad-ons of the political rhelm. I probably am more in line with the Orthodox. I do see God's hand in the return of Israel. You can not have zionism without God. If the political zion movement loses its mooring from scripture, it will also lose its right, and support from God. The high commission from God to return and shine a light to all nations of the world as a representative of the People of God, in all manner, and having a pure faith, is also commanded, and by the grace of God it will come to pass.
