So as not to hijack another thread, I was wondering if anyone who has a background in masonry can share some of your experiences. I have heard a lot of talk about it, but I'm totally ignorant of the whole issue of masonry. Would love to hear from anyone; if you would rather PM me, that would be cool too. Just trying to educate myself on the subject.
I studied some during my engineering course. The basics are that the masonry cannot withstand tension so masonry structures are designed so that the only forces are compressive (unless other materials are used). Once you manage this the only issue is stability which does not depend on size so if you can design a viable, scaled down model the full size structure will work. Flying buttresses are cool.
I'm gonna get blaseted for what I will say so I will PM you later. My brother is a mason my grandad was.

I would like to know a little bit more myself (and not about engineering, thank you )

I have noticed the diligent work of masons in many large elaborate churches. Flying buttresses yes, tension and structure. Some very ornate masonry work adorning some very elaborate churches. Utah is a good place to start when studying as it offers many fine examples of ornate architecture.
