Do veterans have a responsibility towards the military?
Do we as private citizens who are veterans have a responsibility to be mindful of how our military is used and treated by the politicians who run the country?
It seems to me like veterans are expected to be like cheer leaders for the military instead of responsible stewards who offer a voice of conscience for the soldier under arms who lacks that basic right. Are we doing what we can to stand up for our brothers in arms?
Being a veteran myself. I stand that we have a responsibility to use our experience in our act of citizenship.
- We should tell the truth as we have experienced it. It is our duty to debunk the publics comic book image of the military.
- Combat veterans are the first to question the need for war and the last to call for war. Back when I was 19 and eager for action, a Viet Nam Vet warned me "If you ever pray for war in front of me again, Ill kill you!" He went on to advise me "Always pray that cooler heads pravail among the leaders."
- Anyone who has served knows that no matter how easy and assured victory appears, thing swill always go wrong. When you are part of the system, you can see the weak areas any enemy could exploit if he only knew them. "Our wonder weapons will prevail so we have a duty to go to war when we otherwise shouldnt" Is never the right answer.
Veterans, unless they never have seen any real action, are rareley eager for more. It is our duty to tell the truth and not to join the wannabes and chickenhawks in the cheer leading section.
This is not about supporting veterans. It is about weather veterans are obligated to join the crowd in cheering on a war weather or not they agree with it. I for one do not believe we have a duty, legally or morally to rubber stamp the policies of our government simply because we are veterans.
As far as the treatment you recive in basic. Having been an RCC (Navy version of DI)
There is a method to the madness. You cannot have a buch of individuals in a unit. Rome provides a perfect example of this. Take any Barbarian and put him in the arena with a Roman Soldier in individual combat, the Barbarian wouls more than likely come out on top. In the field of battle however, the Barbarians wouls always lose. Reason....Teamwork. Only when the Barbarians adopted the Roman armor, formations, discipline, and teamwork did "Barbarian grit prevail. Only when all other things were equal. Since the military DID adobpt the more liberal ways you advocate, we cannot win against a bunch of ragged militia armed with rusty old AK's RPG's and IED's. In spite of there being no major battles, only skirmishes. The PTSD rate is higher than it has been in any previous war. So, while it appears to be demeaning, it was is needed to form a cohesive figting force. If you don't like it, don;t join.

Warriors dance along a knife edge, maintaining the balance of their totality...celebrating strength while keeping it rigidly under control, only bringing it to bear when it is appropriate and unavoidable.

Veterans need to suport their comrades in arms. Not the services.
Those in uniform have little voice to speak out, and very limited in how they say it.
Those of us that have been in, know what it is like and we must be the voice of the current military personel.
Not supporting our goverments ideals and policies, but supporting the tradition of our military. Maintaining honor or restoring it, so the military will continue to be looked to by our HS/college graduates.
We must speak out when our goverment is not acting properly, invading or attacking the wrong people, going to far in intergations, allowing others to torture those that have surendered to the US military.
We must fight to minimize our military members suffering, unchanging policy, costing lives must be challenged. We must fight to keep them paid well, and have the best benefits. We must ensure the treatement of the post war wounded(physical and mental) is the best it can be, and that it attempts to treat ptsd.
We are the advocate for those that replaced us. We cheer for the good, and scream at the poor treatment or policy that affects our comrades.
