The Handbook of Christian Apologetics by Dr. Peter Kreeft and Ron Tacelli answers a whole host of questions posed by skeptics or even Christians seeking better understanding.
I can recommend you a ton of books on sound Catholic theology if you're interested. Just say the word and I'll post them.
If you are into theology in a big way, an excellent author is N. T. Wright. He has written numerous books, as well as lecturing in the UK and the Vatican Seminarium. His books include a three-volume set on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Other authors who are noted for their Christian books are C. S. Lewis and John R. W. Stott. I have read a number of books written by these men.

Seconded - especially Surprised by Hope.

Can't go wrong reading the sayings of the Desert Fathers.

"We are like dwarfs sitting on the shoulders of giants. We see more, and things that are more distant, than they did, not because our sight is superior or because we are taller than they, but because they raise us up, and by their great stature add to ours." John of Salisbury, 1159
