If I were you, I'd read them both along side each other since the OT does get to be repetitive with history and what not.
Such as this bible reading plan: http://thebooksofthebible.info/pdf/r...an/blended.pdf
however, it goes by pages and with a certain Bible called "The Books of the Bible" which you can get at The Books of The Bible |

It follows the church calendar. Almost the whole NT is read and about one third of the OT is read in a year.
Some type of reading plan where you read some of the OT and the NT would probably be the most helpful. If you were going to start with one or the other I would recommend reading the NT starting with the Gospels. They provide proper way to interpret the OT.

consider this... when the early church was just that, there was no new testament. There was only the 'scriptures'.
But the OT is not that bad, you just need to find a decent schedule to help you.
To this end, let me recommend Torah Portions.

I think it is good to start in the Gospel of John, because the entire Bible is about Jesus and I think new believers would be served better by getting to know Jesus and then going back to the Old Testament, after becoming familiar with Jesus, and it will be illuminated a lot more.
Really though the most important thing is to read it regularly, read at least a chapter everyday.

Thanks Try reading Chuck and Karen Cohen's book Homecoming - Our Return To Biblical Roots http://www.amazon.co.uk/Homecoming-Our-Return-Biblical-Roots/dp/1852404671 in conjunction with David Pawson's book Unlocking The Bible Omnibus http://www.Goodseed.org/ that should resolve the issue (not to mention provide hours of stimulating and enthralling reading).
