The Old Testament sets the foundation for the New, infact, the authors of thew New Testament drew all their teaching and ideas from the OT. If I were you, I'd read them both along side each other since the OT does get to be repetitive with history and what not.
It follows the church calendar. Almost the whole NT is read and about one third of the OT is read in a year.
Some type of reading plan where you read some of the OT and the NT would probably be the most helpful. If you were going to start with one or the other I would recommend reading the NT starting with the Gospels. They provide proper way to interpret the OT.

Is it important to read the Old Testament before the New? I am having a very hard time getting through the repetitive scripture in the the O.T.
Thanks
I think it is good to start in the Gospel of John, because the entire Bible is about Jesus and I think new believers would be served better by getting to know Jesus and then going back to the Old Testament, after becoming familiar with Jesus, and it will be illuminated a lot more.
Really though the most important thing is to read it regularly, read at least a chapter everyday.
