My eldest daughter, just starting at University this academic year, called us to say she had been given a £1080 bursary by the University. Naturally we congratulated her, thinking it was because of the excellent marks she got when she left high school, or maybe her interest in music, or because she is studying theology and Hebrew etc.
"No, dad, that's not what the bursary was for". So, I said: "Why did they give you over a £1000?". Well dad, it's because we are poor!!
This is the first time in my life I have ever been classed, officially, as poor. It is a mortifying experience when your daughter calls you to tell you that the family is officially regarded as being poor, to the extent that she has been given £1080 to help her through this year at Uni.

Thank God for His many provisions from many directions. Don't take it too hard Heber. From what it sounds like, you did not have to fill out a bunch of paperwork for others to mull over in front of you and decide whether you really need their help or not. I do understand what you are feeling.

Yes, we did, but at a distance, by post and phone. They didn't believe my expenses nor my income from weddings and funerals or from work at the College; the last was easy to prove but how, I asked, can I prove that I didn't do more than the number of weddings & funerals I told them about? I can prove what I did but I cannot prove that I didn't do this or that! Derrrr - they are idiots who do not think before opening their mouth. They were happy with my stipend figure though - that I could prove very easily.
Then they lost all the papers... three times over, different papers at different times and, of course, they couldn't then process the claim until they had ALL the papers together in one place. We sent out this and that and did special delivery etc but no joy. It got to us so much that, in the end, we had to call our MP and he asked a question in the House of Commons for the Education Minister to look into our case. Things happened quickly then and our daughter got her Student Loan and, eventually the Student Grant!
But I never expected to be officlally classed as poor that we needed extra help from the University - we've always found that the Lord has been so generous to us when we've been near the bread line before, so we don't worry about these things, but I didn't think we were 'poor' at the moment! The shock is the classification - not what G_d has done for us in his love and mercy (we're used to that, many times over).

Sorry for my misunderstanding....
I do understand though the feeling of being classified as poor. I know that God always provides for me and even though I knew that my income classified me in the poor I personally did not really feel poor. I have always seen God supply in varieties of ways. I am blessed. Yet when I applied for food stamps and got them, that put me into a whole different classification. I felt blessed that they did not question me as much as I was expecting, yet, it's still kind of demoralizing.

Maybe an backhand apology for all the inconvience.

Someone makes one million a year, there poor compared to someone making one Billion a year. [One owns a Jet; the other can’t afford a Jet]
Someone makes enough money to own two new cars and eats out every day. Someone makes enough money to own one new car and eats out one time a week.
Someone makes enough money to have an old used car and eats hamburger once a week. Someone makes enough money to catch a bus and eats beans and rice.
Someone can’t afford shoes. Someone don’t have feet
Someone makes enough money to pay for 2 children to collage. Someone doesn’t make enough money to send one child to collage.
Someone making one million a year complaining that he’s poor because he’s not making enough to afford a jet looks arrogant in the eyes of the man that can’t afford shoes.
It’s all about perspective!

That is very true. I don't think we are poor... which was why I was surprised, but the those who live by the standards of the world obviously think we are poor enough to need an extra £1080 on top of the grant she gets and the student loan she has to take out to pay for her own education at Uni. She expects to leave Uni in three years time with a BA (Hons) in Theology and over £20,000 personal debt to repay to the government (that's the way it works in England - but not in the whole UK).

I look at it like this: In monetary value I would be considered poor by many. And rich by many. So, I don’t give it much thought if I am rich or poor! I have 5 children and all 5 went to collage with grant, loan, gifs, and government help.
Heber no disrespect! Why give a flip if the government labels you as poor? Truly you don’t put that much value in what others think of your financial stature!

Torah - no disrespect received! No, I was just amazed that the world clearly thought, by their standards, that we are poor enough to need extra help! It speaks volumes about the world in which we live where the real poor get nothing and those who are not really poor get help! The contradiction with Yeshua's teaching is only too clear! I really don't care what they think - it is the principle by which the world works that amazes me.
