Has anyone here read the book " Orthodox and Wesleyan Spirituality" ? . I did about a year ago and really enjoyed it. It discusses areas of similarity between the teachings of Wesley and Eastern Christian thought focusing a lot on the issues of holiness, sanctification, and theosis. A second book from the same authors came out comparing Orthodox and Wesleyan understanding of scripture ( Orthodox and Wesleyan Scriptural Understanding and Practice ) but I haven't got around to reading that one yet.

Both look interesting. If it wasn't for the fact that I have 20 + books waiting for me to read, I 'd consider getting them.
yes Wesley was very much influenced on the Eastern Orthodox and the RCC's doctrine of theosis. It is the basis to his Entire Sanctification that he taught.
His view of the Eucharist and the presence of Body and Blood. He's got to be rollling in his grave at what today's Wesleyan's Church's (UMC, CotN and Wes.) Churchs have done with the Eucharist. Some believe in only symbolic view, use of grape juice, once a month, to some even only hold just a few times a year.
Egaads he's got to be rolling in his grave. LOL

Mine does it at the most 4 times a year. I wish it was more.
Christos, as someone who grew up primarily in the CotN, I've often considered purchasing those two volumes. Never have gotten around to it though. They do look interesting to read I admit.
Wow, I didn't know there was a third book. The first two are in "my" Church library but I haven't seen the third yet. I will have to get it soon.

Sounds interesting! But real Christianity is not about theology or doctrine but about a relationship with the One True Living God.
LST
"Real Christianity?" How does one develop a proper relationship with the Lord without at least some rudimentary understanding of church doctrine? I think correct doctrine is a very important part of the faith; if it weren't, then why did those who contributed to the New Testament spend so much time trying to correct the way things were being done in the Church?
3 If anyone teaches other doctrine and does not agree with the sound teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the teaching that promotes godliness, 4 he is conceited, understanding nothing, but having a sick interest in disputes and arguments over words. From these come envy, quarreling, slanders, evil suspicions, 5 and constant disagreement among men whose minds are depraved and deprived of the truth, who imagine that godliness is a way to material gain. (1 Timothy 6 HCSB)
As for the main topic, I haven't read those books, but I think Wesley's idea of total sanctification is fascinating. I come from a Methodist background, but, oddly enough, I've only recently developed an interest in the writings and sermons of John Wesley himself.
