Easter has roots in paganism too. I agree - it's what you make of it.

1 Peter 5:8-9
Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experience of suffering is required of your brotherhood throughout the world.
Easter has roots in paganism too. I agree - it's what you make of it.
Yes but even in paganism Easter was a celebration of life, not death. Halloween is fine as a harvest feastival, but as a celebration of death it is creepy.

From what I understand, it was originally the Celtic New Year's Eve. The costumes were all about scaring out the spirits of people who had died over the last year and getting them to 'move on'. The bonfires were for purification.
For me ... it's my birthday. I'm now a year more ancient than this time last year.
As long as nobody expects the gates of Hell to open up and release the dead, there shouldn't be a problem.

Last year, Nick Pisa writes in the Daily Mail, the newspaper Avvenire, published by the Italian bishops, appealed for a full-blown boycott, describing Halloween as a “dangerous celebration of horror and the macabre.” Aldo Bonaiuto, head of the Catholic Church's anti-occult and sect unit, said the event “promotes the culture of death,” could spur 'pitiless (Satanic) sects without scruples,” “pushes new generations towards a mentality of esoteric magic and … attacks sacred and spiritual values through a devious initiation to the art and images of the occult.
The Daily Mail is not a credible source for what the Vatican thinks about anything.
Actually, the Daily Mail is not a credible source for anything.
(We're getting this from British newspapers, because we haven't been able to find the original story at the L'Osservatore Romano Web site.)
And the moral of the story? Don't believe everything you read... ESPECIALLY if it comes from the mainstream media.
I remember several years ago (2002), some newspaper ran a story that was originally from the Onion... "Congress Threatens to Leave D.C. Unless New Capitol is Built." It made worldwide distribution before the truth came out.
Another time, the New York Times ran a story about 42 midgits being severely mutilated while competing under the "Cambodian Midget Fighting League", in a battle against a lion. The origin? A couple of friends were arguing whether a group of 40 unarmed midgets could use the power of teamwork to defeat a fully-grown African lion. The the "pro-lion" guy created a fake webpage.
And one of my favorite stories that was clearly fake, meant to be a joke in the first place, and yet was picked up by the mainstream media as true:
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

"No matter how "right" you may be on various points, you must be diplomatic also. The first and important thing is not "rightness" at all, but Christian love and harmony. Most "crazy converts" have been "right" in the criticisms that led to their downfall; but they were lacking in Christian love and charity and so went off the deep end, needlessly alienating people around them and finally finding themselves all alone in their rightness and self-righteousness. Don't you follow them!..."
-Father Seraphim (Rose)
"Personal opinions have no role in ministry of any kind. When we represent the Church, then we ought only say and do what the Church has asked us to do. All else is wasted energy and an opportunity for sin. It is when we lapse into personal opinions, even when we dress them in the language of the Church, that conflict will arise."
- His Grace, Bp. JOSPEH
I would like to see the Halloween spokesman warn us about the Big Pumpkin sitting in Rome. Clearly a bigger problem for the Christian Church. Okay, little ticked I didn't get any candy, too.
Some things have weird ties but you can make use them for fun and good now, making of it as you will as others have said. I see it now where kids just love to dress up for halloween, I have a fun party with friends, we all get candy and watch movies, have special events with games during the month for halloween, etc.
