I think you're right, steve4.truth. There are many people who think "little white lies" are okay and acceptable. But even the littlest white lie will separate someone from God. And no matter how they try to justify a lie, it's still a lie and still sin. There should be no compromise in a Christian's life.
So it is ok to spoil the surprise birthday party for your son so you won't have to lie about whether there is a party or not.
It is ok to to tell your 5 year old daughter that the art project that she worked so hard on is a pile of crap, thus crushing her creative spirit so you won't have to lie by saying it is wonderful.
It is ok to tell your mother in-law what you really think of her meatloaf, thus insuring that she will forever view you as that ungrateful little wretch who married her daughter, so you won't have to lie and make her feel good about her efforts.
It is ok to tell your wife she is a fat cow so you won't have to lie when she asks "do these jeans make me look fat?"
It is ok to go on about how awful your life is when someone asks "how are you?", thus creating an uncomfortable situation for the person who was just trying to be polite, so you won't have to lie by saying "I'm fine".
It was much better to tell the Nazis about the Jews hiding in your attic so they could be hauled off to concentration camps so you wouldn't have to lie and possibly save a life or two.
Just how brutally honest do you really want people to be?

This is the year I have the unfortunate task of killing Santa for my 7 year old daughter.
"Killing Santa?" Santa is just a pretend story like lots of other stories out there. As a Christian we should be teaching our children about St. Nicholas. He was a Bishop who was also in charge of an orphange. At night they would hang up their socks to dry by the fire and he would put treats in the sock if they were good. If they were not good, then he would put coal in the sock and they would throw the coal in the fire. Being symbolic of their sins being thown into the fire. So there are lots of Christian stories we can tell our kids. In fact the Bible is filled with them.
Well, lenpettis74, Thanks be to God you're willing to let myths die and have decided to open the door to Truth for your daughter. I think letting Saint Nicholas into your home is a wonderful idea, but it should be complete with the extra bonus of getting to put one's shoes on the window ledge for St. Nicholas to fill with goodies on the the 17th. Ooooops. Is the feast still on the 17th? I forgot and I'm too lazy to look it up. or is it only one shoe that goes in the window? Some use the Advent season to include all kinds of stuff. What a great season to live and grow in Christ! For me as a new Christian, its was wonderful to see how many stores of the Saints were interwoven into the fabric of worship. Have fun!
Peace and all good,
Gail
P.S. I settled on the Advent wreath and lighting of candles and such. Have you tried an Advent wreath yet?
We have two different views of the world and religion. I believe God's in charge, you believe we are.
No I believe that God is in charge, but we have two different views of what God views are. There is nothing wrong with good fun, and that is also what the holidays are. Don't get me wrong Jesus's birth figured greatly when I was growing up but we also had a great time giving and recieving gifts and getting gifts from Santa. You should not get a high and mighty position of the little things. There is a lot more important issues out there. Let kids be kids there will be a time in their future that they wished that they could go back in time when thay had less problems. This was one of my mothers favorite time of the year and it is one of mine too. Seeing a childs face lite up on Christmas morning should remind everyone that our face should lite up to for the gift that God gave so long ago.
If you tell a story about something that never really happened is that a lie?
Where would that put the parables Jesus used? Is there any varification that those events truly happened?
