1 Peter 5:8-9
Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experience of suffering is required of your brotherhood throughout the world.
Hello I am at the moment a Christian, and have been all my life. But very recently I have started question allot of my beliefs. I just have a few questions which really have been (for better or worse) drawing myself out of believing in god.
I've been debating it allot with myself about some of these questions, which I’m confused about for almost a year. And I just wanted to before I made a decision see what other Christians can say to answer them.
1. When I read a fairytale or hear tales of things like unicorns I obviously know that these aren’t real. a friend one day asked me why I know this, which I obviously replied with well there is no evidence of them being real so they're are obviously make belief. Which my friend then replied “well that’s kinda the same for god and the bible, so how can they be real?”. This really did shock me as I am a firm believer in logic.
So how can I believe if I can’t see any firm evidence of god, and still believe in logic?
2. I am also very interested in science and have a firm belief in allot of the theories such as the big bang and evolution (I believed god caused the big bang). My same friend then questioned me again. Asking “well many scientists believe that there was complicated series of events that caused the big bang. Which I replied with “well god started those events". My friend then said “So you're going to label any unexplained cause with god did it, god made it happen. That is the stupidest theory ever, as you have no evidence and just label anything you don’t understand as god done it. How does that help?”
Which kinda troubles me, as the cause and effect theory could be labelled to explain anything without any actual evidence?
3. Ok so say I pray to god, and he never answers my prayers? Then why should I pray to him?
4. Isn’t it less moral to good just because you want to do good for god, then to do good willingly in the benefit of others without wanting a reward? So why do people not in our religion get treated as less equal then us, as surely If they show goodness without wanting a reward, they far out do us in love?
5. Why is homosexuality seen as bad? When nearly everyone works on Sunday (the day of rest) the day that the bible says people should be put to death for working on?
Hi Moonshine,
I know exactly where you are coming from. I was raised up in a Christian family all my life and believed I was a Christian. I did not really come to know God until I was saved in college.
Before I was saved I had a lot of questions. That was what got me started to look for answers. I made up my mind that I was either gonna find out if God was real or not. And if He is, I would give up everything and worship Him and stop sinning. And if He is not,…then I will stop doing all the “Christian” things I was doing and continue to live my life the way I wanted to.
So asking these kinds of questions were the first thing to spark my conversion. I had to know the TRUTH.
So I’m glad that you are being true to yourself, and asking these question. Make sure you write everything down, and when you find the answers, write them down as well.
Also, when you pray, pray out loud, so that you will know exactly what you said. And when God has answered, you will know that He has given the answer for the prayer.
[1. This is a really good point here. Unicorns today come from people fantasying about them…or in the past, people were obtaining horns from whales and placing them on horses and claiming that they have discovered unicorns. For all we know it could have been a bull, or horse. Hey if God can make a bull with a horn, why would it be impossible for Him to make a horse with a horn? But as for right now, we think that it is just mythology. The bible does not mention “unicorns.”
Romans 1:19-20 states that all the creation around you, the universe and everything that is created is proof that God exists, and therefore men is without excuse.
Even if someone was to prove to you all the places in the bible existed, and where Jesus walked, and even Jesus’ tomb….it would mean NOTHING. Because salvation comes by Faith alone, in things that are not seen.
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of thingsnotseen.
Even when Jesus did signs and wonders in front of people, people marveled at Him at that time, but did not worship Him, later they were the same crowd that had Him crucified.
Experience is nothing. But the Word of God is everything. That’s why you must read the Word of God so that you can believe. And when you have faith in God, He will build your faith.
God allows us to give Him a chance to prove Himself to us. He is always faithful. Take a look at what Gideon did in Judges 6:39, and what God said in Malachi 3:10. Judges 6:39 (King James Version)
39And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.
Malachi 3:10 (New King James Version)
10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse,
That there may be food in My house,
And try Me now in this,”
Says the LORD of hosts,
“ If I will not open for you the windows of heaven
And pour out for you such blessing
That there will not be room enough to receive it.
God is able to increase our faith when we trust in Him. Then in doing so we can believe. Blessed are those who believe without seeing. But we should never test God in a bad way or tempt Him, like they did in Luke 20: Luke 20:23 (King James Version)
23But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?
Tempt here means: in a bad sense: to test on maliciously , craftily to put to the proof his feelings or judgment
Last comment on question number 1. Logic is not the answer. It can not explain everything. Think of the demon possessed. They are people who are possessed and can take down more than10 men, speaking different languages, speaking with a voice that represents demons and doing really weird stuff. This has happened at my church before. Logic cannot explain that no matter how you put it. You’ll just go crazy and round and round in circles if you try to understand that from human reasoning.
God is not human. We are human, our minds and thinking are limited to inside the box. The Word of God is a spiritual scripture. That’s why we cannot apply human thinking to everything, especially things that are spiritual.
2.) That is not a stupid theory. Actually the “big bang” theory or the “evolution theory” are just theories, and have not been proven yet. I majored in health field, and minor in biological field, and I have yet to see a theory that disproves God or proves the “evolution theory.” Actually I think the evolution theory is pretty stupid, because with my understanding of the scriptures….it’s something Satan made up to trick people into believing they are really monkeys. I guess the evolution theory proves itself wrong. Just for your thinking: If people really came from monkeys, then why are there monkeys today, and no monkeypeople. There’s no monekypeople today in the transition process of going from monkeys to people. NOTHING. So far, no proof. That’s why it’s just a theory. But we're not here to talk about evolution, but GOd. It’s okay if you love science and biology.. It’s basically just the study of what God created.
3.) Never????? Are you sure?
Points: - Ask yourself if you are saved or not?
-Do you pray according to God’s will or yours?
-Are you living in sin? Because God doesn’t listen to those who are living and sin, and at the same time commanding God to do this and that. Disobedience is sin also.
-Do you pray outloud? When you pray outloud, it helps you to know exactly what’s being asked and then you can’t lie to yourself and say that God never answered.
-No answer, is an answer.
-Answers from the scriptures, are answers.
4.) Simple, when you do good for God, you’re actually doing good for all. That is why God’s greatest commandment is love your God with all your heart, mind , soul. Because when you do this, everything else follows, including loving your neighbors and enemies.
5.) Homosexuality is perversion of the purpose that God has made our bodies for. He says that it is wrong, so it is a sin. The Sabbath, day of rest, is on Saturday, not Sunday. And that law was for only the Israelites, not the gentiles.
__________________ Oh Lord, my God. My life is in your hands. You placed me in your lap during my days of trial, calmed my soul when I was afraid. You showed me the power of the Word Lord, for I was too stubborn to believe. Even in my stubbornness you saved me. I was weak, but you cared for me...was lost, but you found me. You freed me from the devil's chains, and told me the Truth, much more than what that liar told me. Your presence makes me smile Holy Spirit, I love you...O, King of kings, and Lord of lords....
1. I walk by faith, not by sight. Let me ask you this....you say you are a fan of science(good..me too!)....have you tested every theory, personally, that you put stock in? I haven't. I trust the theory of gravity...I see what appears to be proof to me...and I trust those that back up Newton's claims. I put faith in that...I don't attempt to go out and prove to myself by conducting experiments. For me....I only need to read about Bonhoeffer or MLK to know that God is real and God is love.
2. This board is full of Christians that embrace science and evolution.
3. I think it's hard for us to see God's work in our lives. Let me share this story. I have three kids. When I had my first I was overwhelmed and she was one high maintenance girl. I prayed for patience and strength. I got pregnant again...please God, I'm going to be needing that patience and strength I requested.....but instead I had another daughter, different type of high maintenance. I had to parent two girls that were polar opposites....that didn't help. Where were my answered prayers? So then we have foster kids....seriously God, I'll be needing a heavy dose of patience and strength....God...um, our foster daughter is manic depressive..wait, this one has ODD..wait...God...you are supposed to be giving me more patience not adding more stress! Then baby number 3....and wow, special needs kid. Gulp. Then it hit me one day when #3(my son) was a bit older.....God answered my prayers. Not in the way I expected (taking away stress, making me feel like I was on Xanax) and not with any great fan fare...but suddenly, through those trials...I learned to not sweat the small stuff. I learned to look at each day as a gift and a blank slate. I learned to notice the small blessings that add up to something incredibly wonderful. Don't write God off yet.
4. I don't disregard other religions...or the good that others do. I think it's wonderful and I think God is wonderfully majestic as seen in the richness of creation. Wherever good is being done, it's of God..no matter if the person is giving God credit or someone/something else credit. God is love.
5. I support gay marriage. I support gay adoption. I love my gay brethren....period. And I believe God loves them as well and God wants them to be happy. Christianity and bigotry should never mix.
It sounds like you've been given one example of christianity and it has left you cold. God has an ENORMOUS and warm and loving embrace and we are all welcome to it. Disregard those that tell you that you have to embrace these other things to get to the Father....you don't. You can just go straight to God.
You know how you look at a prism and it's a piece of cut glass. But if you pick it up and turn it around and look from other angles...it's a rainbow. Well, that's christianity. You can stand back and look and say it's simple, cut and dry..cut glass. Or you can pick it up and toss it around....have a hands on relationship with it...and suddenly, the beauty of it surprises you.

When we are born we are born into sin - we are taught sin our who lives while on earth.. When we make up our whole mind to serve the Lord and it takes time then we begin to get taught spiritually... Things and experiences of God. That's why we never fully understand until we have had an experience then that way there is no room for doubt. All I can say is seek God more. Read your bible and talk to God. When something is not right go to God but, this time wait for an answer knowing that he will answer you. Stay Blessed!
No man is perfect but, we do have to answer for our issues. Forgiven but still accountable if you understand what I am saying... No deed is overlooked. Good Or Bad. That's all left up to God because he knows the whole picture which we see in part. So it's wrong for us to pass judgement the best thing for us to do is make sure we are doing what's right and good for ourselves as well as others. Stay Blessed!
