Marriage laws that allow for same-sex marriage do not change the meaning of the word 'marriage'; they reflect a change in that society's view of marriage. The meaning is descriptive, not prescriptive.

Someone told me gay marriage is one of the ways the government is bending societal norms by messing with basic language. Sort of like how the military is said to 'pacify' and area by killing everyone in it. Calling marriage between men the same as between a man and a woman changes the meaning of marriage.

The governmental control of relationships, privileging certain types of monogamous relationships into official "marriages" is a worrying redefinition of terms. Some relationships deserve tax breaks and various other rights; others don't.
I'm not sure how sexual orientation affects that...

The truth is that it isn't a terrible idea to grant marriages and families tax incentives because having stable families does tend to have a positive effect on society in general so I don't mind encouraging that.
I do mind not granting those rights to specific groups of people.
