I won't be long -
&
I'm going there and coming straight back -
Thanks
Not knowing the context it’s hard to say – this was my first impulse, all tongue in cheek of course:
I won't be long means less than 3 days.
I'm going there and coming straight back means I am going to several places but don't want you to know what they are because I want to go there now and not answer 100 questions about what I am doing, where I am going, or who I am seeing. I'm a grown man not a child. I don't need your permission to live my life. I know you don't trust me but I don't want to deal with that right now because I have things to do and places to go. Rest assured I won't be gone long - see #1 above.
To me that means he won't be gone long (I assume to an hour or 2) and the "I'll be coming straight back" means he'll be only going to that one location.
At least with my husband it means that. *shrug*

from my own personal experience this sounds like your husband is feeling some sort of pressure from you.
He will say things like he will be back in half an hour so you wont try prevent him from going or to avoid a situation.
I agree....I can be guilty of this kind of thing so I can avoid unneeded confrontation, like "well whay so long? what is you you have to do thats taking so long? (asked about work), "cant you do that tomorrow"?
I take those comments at face value. Figure if they don't really mean those things it's kind of like lying. If something comes up where they aren't executed as they were promised, it's usually because something unexpected came up and while a call is appreciated, people have to deal with things as they come up sometimes.
With my husband "I won't be long" is normally any where between three to five hours
"I'm going there and straight back" may mean that he has all good intentions of only going to one place, but once there remembers this and that and this and that. lol Or runs into a friend and goes out to shoot pool, and maybe dinner.

When my hubby says he won't be long he usually means "I'll only be as long as I have to be". Therefore, I usually don't bother putting a definite time limit to it. I just know that when he's gotten through with all that he feels he needs to do, he'll be heading back. He's often called in to the hospital where he works to micro manage things from time to time, so there's never any telling how long such visits might take. I know he goes because he has to as part of his duty so I try not to add any extra stress to the fact. I do ask him about how things went when he gets back, though.
