Well, that would depend... where's he going? LOL!
If it's the media store, "going there and coming right back" is subjective. Yep, he's going there, and yep he'll come straight back.... but it might be 3 hours before I see him again.
LOL!
If it's the grocery store or any other shop, however long it takes to get whatever he was sent for and to get through the line, no longer... no deviation from plan.
If it's been a while and I haven't heard anything, I'll call and make sure everything's ok. Sometimes things happen, and it's just good to know. One time he took a long while and I didn't hear anything, it was due to his mom having a car accident on the way to get him - so it was good that I did call. Another time, they got badly delayed in traffic and he was so concerned with what was happening in the traffic that he didn't think to call. Once he saw the time, it was "Oh, well no wonder you're worried! We have been a long time!!"

I won't be gone long = I am not packing a bag or taking food provisions, you will not need to cook while I am gone. We'll be together before the next mealtime.
I'm going there and coming straight back = This is my primary objective, no secondary has been selected, but soft targets may still be engaged i.e. "I'm going to the hardware store and coming straight back, though I may stop at the grocery if I remember we were low on milk this morning or stop to help an old lady with a flat tire, but don't intend* to go to the grocery (*which would then be a secondary objective) nor to drive around until I see a stranded motorist in need of help."
At least that is what those phrases mean to this man. |

By employing good tradecraft, you can feign the hardware store and grocery, leave the house between meals, take your mistress to Belize for scuba, come home with cold milk AND the caulk for the bathroom.
